Laurie gave a report on the work of the past year including the federal election campaign, membership work, and the leadership convention. She also highlighted goals set at the 2008 AGM for the Party and how these had been met in the past year. Resolutions on agriculture and education were presented at the provincial convention with the former resolution passed and the latter resulting in setting up a task force, so the riding is making an impact at the provincial level. Some input has also been made into the agriculture policy of a new leader from riding channels. New delegates were able to attend the leadership convention in March and are ready to infuse some new energy into the riding association. The every-member-vote for the new leader also helped member- ship to boom and resulted in strong grassroots participation from New Democrats across the province. Laurie also spoke about the provincial leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party. Andrea Horvath has experience in the grassroots as a union and party organizer. She also has municipal and provincial government experience. As a resident of Hamilton she is and will be a strong voice for workers’ rights and will keep concerns about job losses and the economy at the forefront. Horvath already has rural and southwestern Ontario on her radar and will be, said Laurie, the best of the four leadership hopefuls to have as our leader with respect to the needs of our rural riding. It is hoped that Huron-Bruce can organize an event to host Horvath in the riding in the near future. This year a federal NDP convention will take place in Halifax in August. Laurie encouraged members to apply for a delegate position. The meeting also included an opportunity for informal reports from members of various farm organizations and union groups. An open discussion and goal setting for future directions for the riding also took place. The new executive board for the Huron Bruce NDP was elected as follows: president, Wilhelmina Laurie; past president, Grant Robertson; vice-president, Bruce, Jan Johnstone; vice-president, Huron, John Beardsley; secretary, Brent Bowyer; membership secretary, Heather Klopp and Diane Klopp; federal treasurer, Fran McQuail; provincial treasurer, Mike Dunn; provincial council delegates, Grant Robertson and Sarah Slater; ONDP Youth Rep, Nicholas McGillvray. Huron-Bruce NDP elects executive On Sunday, March 29, at Knox United Church the introduction of youth minister Kathy Douglas took place. This was shared by Rev. Pat Cook and the Gospel reading was John 12: 20-33 read by Kathy Douglas. Upcoming events include Palm Sunday, communion and receiving of new members, which will all take place on Sunday, April 5. Camp Menesetung clean up day will take place on Saturday, May 9 at 3 p.m. This is a day when volunteers work as a team to clean up the site, the cabins and some of the main buildings. Lunch is provided and the site looks fantastic when the day is done. The deadline for the early bird registration fee for Camp Menesetung is May 1. After that date the fee increases by $10. Camp Menesetung’s wish list for 2009 is posted in the narthex. Help in providing any of the items listed would be greatly appreciated. The Auburn UCW will be meeting on April 6 at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Sandy Herbison, who has just returned from a visit from China and will share some of her adventures. At Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church on Sunday, March 29 Rob Campbell shared a message on The Greatest Example Ever. Betty Archambault read the minutes and Ila the treasurer’s report. Several ladies quilted on a sailboat lap quilt for the cancer unit at Wingham hospital. Others worked on crazy quilt blocks. The last quilt made, Hobby Holly, was donated to the Alzheimer’s Society for a fundraiser. The next meeting will be held on April 13 at the home of Deanna Snell with Eileen McClinchey as president of the month. Deanna had a St. Patrick’s Day contest and Ila served a delicious lunch of fruit breads and cheese. Three ladies finished the quilt on March 12. Verwey won all but the first of eight games in round-robin play, then continued his winning ways through to the championship. He now advances to the Domininon competition in Alberta in May. Verwey and his doubles partner Andy Lubbers came close to taking the provincial title, losing in the finals. Members first started off the 4-H pledge, then the minutes were read followed by the treasurer’s report. After that members were decorating cakes. They used two cakes made during the last meeting that had been frozen. They were shown how to cut a cake into layers using a piece of nylon string. Monique then demonstrated decorating and how to use the tips to go on the ends of the icing bags. Members covered a cake with frosting, first spreading on a thin crumb layer, then putting a second thicker layer on top. She showed how to make flowers, edges and a rose with the different tips. They all got to try holding the bag properly and practised making some rosettes and using the tips. The achievement day is this coming Saturday at the Cranbrook Hall.
