The team entered the WOAA Local League playdowns. Blyth played a home-and-home-round- robin with Milverton, Wingham, Monkton, and Kincardine. Blyth ended up with seven wins and one loss after the round robin and won the WOAA Novice LL South Division Championship. Blyth then went on to play a round robin with Walkerton and Kincardine. Blyth hosted Kincardine on Wednesday, March 25. The home team ended up losing the contest 6- 3. Blyth goalscorers were Bailey Bos with two, and Tanner Boven with one. Assists went to Bos and Connor Brooks. Lucas Townsend played very well in the Blyth net keeping the game close with some early saves on Kincardine breakaways. Blyth travelled to Kincardine on Thursday, March 26 and won 2-1. Blyth goalscorers were Bos and Boven, who scored the winning goal. Assists went to Reese Sparling, Keldan Pawitch and Kyle Josling. Once again Townsend played very well in the Blyth net. Townsend turned away 10 shots in the third period and Blyth hung on to win. On Saturday, March 28 Blyth hosted Walkerton. Blyth took a first period lead with Bos scoring on a breakaway. Assists went to Sparling and Mason Campbell. However, that was the only goal Blyth got and Walkerton went on to win 6-1. Despite the score Townsend made many saves and turned aside four Walkerton breakaways in the third period. On Sunday, March 29 Blyth went to Walkerton looking for revenge. Blyth opened the scoring when Bos scored on a breakaway in the first period. Walkerton scored later in the first period to tie the game at one. Bos scored two more goals in the second, then two more in the third. Blyth won 5-3. Assists went to Nick Aitken, Evan Plunkett, and Boven. Townsend played another amazing game in the Blyth net stopping several breakaways in the third period. Blyth finished the round robin with two wins and two losses. Blyth has to wait and see if Kincardine beats Walkerton. If they do then all three teams will be two wins and two losses and it will go to a tie breaker. Team members are: Townsend, Campbell, Sparling, Spencer Lazarevich, Bos, Boven, Keldan Pawitch, Josling, Plunkett, Connor Brooks, Aitken, Kayla Gauthier, Clarissa Gordon, Snowden Renaud and Michael Blok. Coaching staff is Darryl Plunkett, David Sparling, Matt Townsend, and Brad Aitken. In OWHA provincial playdowns this weekend, the Saugeen Maitland Lightning AA Midgets felt the tearful loss in semi-finals as they fell 2-1 in double overtime to the Whitby Wolves, sending the Lightning to the bronze medal game to play the Sudbury Wolves. Sudbury won the provincial gold last year, which made for fierce competition for the Lightning. They lost to the Wolves 2-1, giving the Lightning fourth place in the province out of 48 Midget AA teams. Leading up to the two important games, the Lightning went undefeated winning five other games, beating St. Thomas Panthers 3-2, Windsor Wildcats 5-1, Kanata Senators 2-0, Orillia Hawks 6-0 and Scarborough Sharks 3-2 (the eventual 2009 gold medal winners). The line consisting of Tammy Freiburger, Wingham; Ona Mezenberg, Owen Sound and Victoria Bertrand, Port Elgin was on fire this weekend, earning five goals a piece with Dru Austin, Goderich having two. Other goals came from Chelsey Draker, Listowel; Gina Murray, Lucknow; Kathryn Roy, Owen Sound and Belina Hooper, Meaford. The Lightning had solid goaltending from Emily Kelly, Port Elgin and Sarah McGall, Owen Sound, all weekend with both tenders each earning a shutout. The Saugeen Maitland season has come to an end, but tryouts for 2009- 2010 will take place in Wingham April 22-30. See www.saugeenmaitlandlightning.com for more information. The Blyth PeeWee Reps brought home the banner and trophy from the Goderich Lion’s 60th Annual Young Canada Week PeeWee tournament. Game one was Tuesday, March 17 at 9 a.m. against Teeswater. The Blyth squad was able to win 3-2 in overtime. Scoring were Spencer Stevenson with two, and Mike VanWyk with the game winner. Assists went to Arden Coultes and Matt VanWyk with two, Dustin Pennington, Mike VanWyk and Ryan Nesbitt. In net for Blyth was Dalton Carey. Tuesday, March 17 at 4 p.m. they faced off against Elma Logan. The Blyth squad showed up to play and won 9-0. Carey earned his eighth shutout of the season. Scoring for Blyth were Mike VanWyk with four, Matt VanWyk, Coultes, Nesbitt and Trystan Weber. Everybody, including Carey got an assist. Game three was the semi-final played Thursday, March 19 at 3:30 p.m. against Brussels. Blyth won 6- 1. Scoring were Mike VanWyk with a hattrick, Matt VanWyk, Nesbitt and Pennington. Assists were Braydon Whitfield with four, Nesbitt, three, Matt VanWyk, two and Coultes. The final was played Saturday, March 21 at 3 p.m. against Thamesford. The Blyth squad won the game 4-3 to take the D Division of the tournament. After the trophy and banner presentation the team was called back up to receive the trophy and banner for the Sportsman Team for 2009. The team was sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Blyth, Londesborough and Auburn. In round-robin play the Blyth PeeWee Reps defeated the TCDMHA Rebels in four games in a best-of-five series. At home on Feb. 28 they won 4-2. Scoring were Pennington, the VanWyks and Weber. Assists went to Wyatt Carey, Nesbitt and Matt VanWyk. In net was Dalton Carey. Game two was played in Chatsworth on March 1 with TCDMHA coming out on top 6-2. The VanWyk twins got the only Blyth goals, assisted by Weber and Wyatt Carey. In net was Dalton Carey. Game three was played in Chatsworth on March 7. Blyth won by a tight 2-1 score. Bulging the twine were Pennington, and Matt VanWyk with assists from Stevenson, Coultes and Wyatt Carey. In net was Dalton Carey. Game four was back in front of the home crowd in Blyth on March 8. The boys won 8-3. Scoring were Stevenson with three, Pennington with two, Mike VanWyk, Matt VanWyk and Weber. Assisting were Wyatt Carey, Mike VanWyk, Coultes and Connor Rodger for two. In net again was Dalton Carey. A loss The Blyth Novice Local League took on Kincardine in this round-robin match March 25 at home. It was a tough 6-3 loss for the squad, but they pulled up their socks and skated away with the WOAA south division championship.
