Brussels Atoms take on Tara
The Brussels Atom Reps travelled
to Tara to participate in their
tournament this past weekend. They
posted a win and two losses. They
played against Saugeen Shores,
Owen Sound and Lion’s Head.
Scoring for Brussels were Dawson
Peachey, Kailey Wheeler, Wyatt
Machan, Logan Kellington, and
Delayna Smith. Assisting them were
Kellington, Wheeler, Peachey,
Austin Johnston, Nic Zwep and
Connor Bridge. On defence were
Avery McArter, Nic Zwep, Sean
Mitchell and Kiaran Jared.
The kids took 51 shots on net
throughout the three games and
Derrick Waechter made 39 saves.
After each game, the scorekeeper
chose MVPs from each team.
Against Saugeen Shores, it was
Waechter; against Owen Sound, the
MVP was Bridge and against Lion’s
Head, it was Peachey.
Each of these received an MVP
trophy and a Gatorade. The kids
took in an Owen Sound Attack game
on Saturday night.
The Brussels PeeWee Local
League travelled to Blyth last week
for hockey action.
In the first period, Tim Waechter
scored to take the lead. Midway
through the second period, it was a
pass from Curtis Bloemberg that
helped Colton Hastings score.
Blyth scored shortly after to make
it 2-1 Brussels.
In the third period, Tanner Cardiff
scored to keep his team ahead with
an assist from Waechter.
Minutes later, Blyth scored again.
Thirty seconds later, Waechter
scored his second of the night with a
slapshot from the far side.
Blyth scored again seconds later.
Brussels kept up the heat for the
next half of the third period to skate
away with the 4-3 win. Goalie Austin
Jamieson-Johnston was solid in the
net, making 22 saves throughout the
game.
Last Friday night, the Brussels
PeeWee Locals faced off against
Listowel on home ice. Scoring for
Brussels in this game were Anthony
Vader, Bryce Armstrong, and Colton
Hastings. Assisting them were Vader,
Ben Hruska, Tim Waechter and
Tanner Cardiff. Brussels lost 5-3.
They will play in the Minto
tournament this weekend.
On a snowy Wednesday, Jan. 7
members of the Blyth Bantam boys
broomball team and their parents
travelled to Seaforth to play
broomball.
There was lots of action in this
game, as both teams tried to get on
the scoreboard. Blyth did a great job
keeping the ball out of their end
during the first period. The defence,
Murray Dale, Scott Jefferson, Brody
Nairn, Jordon Reinink and Kalvin
VanMassenhoven, should be
recognized for excellent defensive
efforts during the game.
With just under six minutes left in
the game Derek deBoer broke away
down the side of the ice and took a
shot on goal. Seaforth’s goalie made
a nice save and deflected the ball,
but deBoer followed through with
another shot to score the lone goal of
the game.
Blyth’s keeper Bryce Glousher
earned a shutout.
The coaches decided to practise
overtime. Both teams scored a goal.
Seaforth was first, but Blyth didn’t
give up and Alex Sanders made a
nice pass to Hunter Broda who
looked for an opening, and took the
shot.
This is the last time the Blyth
Bantams hit the ice until the
Mildmay tournament Jan. 17 and
18.

It was fast-paced broomball action in Blyth on the weekend
as teams faced off in games on Saturday and Sunday
during an annual tournament. The men’s teams, the Broken
Trojans from Blyth and Joe’s Garage of Kitchener,
competed Saturday night, with the former winning 3-0.

It’s a new Ontario Hockey League dressing room forBlyth native Anthony Peters. The 18-year-old goalie, traded this January from the
Kingston Frontenacs to the Saginaw Spirit in Michigan,
took no time proving his worth. In his debut with the
team Jan. 7, he earned his first OHL career shutout, with
the Spirit defeating the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-
0.
He had 19 saves on 19 shots and was named one of
three stars of the game.
The victory is even sweeter considering where Peters
was sitting a year ago now. In November, 2007, having
just joined the Frontenac roster, Peter was struck by a car
and sustained a badly-broken leg, which sidelined him
for the season.
His mom, Janice, said Peters spent the summer with a
goalie coach in Toronto trying toget back to where he was. “Heworked really hard all summer. And it took the whole summerbecause he’d been laid up for solong.”
Coming back to the
Frontenacs, Peters was looking
for more time on the ice and
initiated discussion on a trade
through his agent, said Janice.
“He felt a change would
provide better opportunities.”
While Saginaw has a number
one goalie, Janice said, they had
approached Peters’ agent about
playing there, so he is hopeful he will get more ice time.
“Just seeing him back on the ice is exciting because
we hadn’t known if he would ever be there again.”
