During the winter of 1971.72,
the number of fatal snowmobile
accidents declined by 8,9 per-
cent and the number of deaths
dropped by 1,7 percent. The
Canada safety Council's
national reports on snowmobile
accidents just released warns
that these small decreases are
no reason for any. complacency.
Bruce J. Legge, q.c„ President
of the Canada Safety Council
points out that in real numbers,
fatal accidents are down from
112 the previous year to 102 last
winter while deaths are down
only by 2 front 118 to 116 -- har-
dly reason to believe that the
problem is being solved.
Over half of the fatal
snowmobile accidents involved
collisions with other motor
vehicles (cars, trucks, buses and
other snowmobiles) while
almost 15 percent were the
result of breaking through the
ice on lakes and rivers or run-
ning into open stretches of
water,
Sixty-seven percent of the
fatal accidents occurred on
public roads. Another 20 ac-
cidents occurred on lakes and
rivers (15 of these accidents
resulted in 24 drownings), and
13 accidents happened on
private property, including eight
on railway tracks.
Sixty-nine fatal accidents
took place at night while 24 oc-
curred during daylight hours
(the time of occurrence of nine
accidents was unknown).
Ninety-six out of the 116
fatalities were drivers, 17 were
passengers and three were
pedestrians, There were 102
males and 14 females killed in
snowmobile accidents during the
winter of 1971-72. The 25-44 age
group suffered the most
fatalities with 52 followed by
the 16.24 age group with 38
deaths. Eleven deaths (9.5% )
were in the 0-15 age group.
Eighty people died in
collisions with motes vehicles,
trains, wires, fences and other
objects. Fifty-six of these
collisions were with motor
vehicles, while eight people were
killed by trains while travelling
on, or alongside the tracks or
while crossing them. This is up
from two the previous winter.
The operation of snowmobiles
on public roads is still the major
hazard as 66 people were killed
on the roads; 40 on secondary
roads, 19 on municipal streets
and seven on the highways.
The Canada Safety Council
encourages and supports
Provincial Governments and
Municipalities in prohibiting the
operation of snowmobiles on
public roads.
The statistics reveal little
change in the overall picture of
snowmobile tragedies. People
are still being killed by the
careless and thoughtless use of
snowmobiles, One victim fell 40
feet to his death when he drop-
ped into an open quarry.
Over 600,000 households in
Southwestern Ontario will shor-
tly receive a set of specially
printed labels from the post of-
fice. These are to assist residents
in bundling and tieing their
Christmas cards before they are
mailed - so they may reach their
destinations faster.
The "out-of-town" labels for
6c Christmas cards are printed
in red, while the "in-town"
labels are printed in blue.
If your Christmas cards con-
tain more than five words of
personal greeting, they should
be sealed, and mailed at the 8c
letter rate,
Please make sure the address
is correct and complete, includes
apartment or suite number, and
the POSTAL CODE where ap-
plicable. This is the year when
many Canadians will be amen-
ding their Christmas card lists
by adding the POSTAL CODE
for addresses in Manitoba,
Saskatchewan, Alberta, North-
West Territories, Eastern and
South-western Ontario and
Ottawa.

paign this year is GET ME TO

This year's deadlines are:

ber for IN-TOWN.

November - Air Mail - 13th
When driving in the correct
lane you have the mental ease,
and protection of "belonging".
In a sense, says the Ontario
Safety League you are on your
own property. If you leave that
lane you are entering someone
else's domain, and this requires
prior notification (a turn signal)
and permission (if other traffic
is close.) Make sure you never
trespass.
A summer visitor to a small
Latin American town nervously
asked his taxi driver why he
kept switching from the right
side of the road to the left, and
back again. The driver replied:
"Senor, here we do not have
right side and left side - only
sun and shade." Repeated by
Ontario Safety League.
ADELAIDE
DANIELS SAYS'.
SECRET IN THE KITCHEN
.1 believe that any intelligent woman can change her too fat figure to
a more streamline, youthful one — the secret is in the kitchen,
It is not as •difficult as you might think. Women.are the ones who
recognize a fact when they see it, and if your clothes are getting, far
too snug, and you're overweight, I'm sure deep down yap'd like to
do something about it.
1 had an acquaintance that kept putting on weight because she used
her husband as the excuse. "He loves my large meals and says no. ne
cooks like 1 do". This was her security blanket, so to speak, The
trouble was she never really let her husband appreciate her as an
individual. All she thought of was filling and pleasing his appetite.
In this case, the woman should sit down with her husband and let
him know she'd like to lose those extra pounds but needs his help as
well as the rest of the family, to do so.
Leading authorities for years have been telling us "Never under-
estimate the power of a woman". I have found it's the women not
the men that underestimate this power,
By "taking the bull by the horn", and starting to cut down on those
terribly fatty meals, you, your husband and family will gain, not
pounds, but confidence and a brighter outlook.
Both of you will gain a new heart, one' that will enable you to have a
longer life together and reach your life's goals, Your more youthful
figure will be restored and with it will come new vigour and energy
you thought you'd lost due to age. '
Naturally you will be a new wife, transformed on the outside as well
as the inside, and I'm sure your marriage will gain new excitement.
This will give you the greatest gift of all = a new husband.
What you eat affects how you look, so the secret to your success lies
in the kitchen
One tip that quite a few "overweights" do is pin a picture of them-
selves on the inside of the refrigerator so when they go to cheat, they
will visually see themselves as they are.
It's not easy to take that first step, but once taken it's easier to take
the second step and so on. Take time to bring out the best in you.
Your questions are invited.
