It certainly kills any respect one might have had for them. Let's all think twice before we give someone an undeserved blast. INVEST NOW 0 This is the time of general' cleaning up. both in the home and outside, It is also approaching the time when children will be wanting to run about without their shoes, This is a very dangerous practice these days with so much broken glass about. Not only is it on the sidewalks but in the grass where it is hard to see. It is ?Specially prevalent in the well- fro veiled parts of town—not ID itch use to appeal to car drivers not to toss their beer and pop bottles out on to the pavement, we fear, Also along the same lines—we wonder if parents should be warning their children not to drink the contents of pop bottles found on the street. One tot was observed drinking the contents of a pop bottle which had been left on the street, While it is very likely the liquid was harmless. it could happen that a child could be in danger through this very thing. + + In the accou of of the passing of Mrs. Jane Wilson last week, the name of one of the pallbearers, Mr. Harry Woolley of Brucefield, was unintentionally left out. + + + A Clinton boy, W. G. "Bill" Nediger, recently returned from an extensive trip to Moscow. Leningrad. Tallinn, Estonia. Sophia. in Bulgaria and Paris, comes back on May 10 to the church of his childhood (Wesley- Willis) to share his experiences by word and picture. Anyone who is interested is welcome to enjoy the evening. Mr. Nediger taught mathematics at Central Huron Secondary School before going to Althouse College as Registrar and, at present, is at the University of Western Ontario. + + + Ask any clerk in town if people are always polite to them and you will probably get a very loud -NO". One wonders why some people are so rude to those who serve the public. Is it because they think the clerk has no feelings? Do they think the person serving is too stupid to realize just what is being said? More people are rude on the telephone too, than in person—some even being vulgar enough to use, coarse, offensive, four-letter Roses are one of the most attractive as well as one of the most romantic of the garden flowers. With care and attention, they can be the center of attraction in any garden, says D. B, McNeill, horticultural specialist, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Roses are generally available each spring packaged in a plastic bag, with bare roots or in a pot. The first two, bare root or in a bag, are essentially the same and are handled in the same manner at planting time. Roses in this type of packing should only be planted while they are in a dormant condition, Once long shoots are produced, planting is more difficult and the chance of survival is reduced, Roses sold in a container can be planted at any time during the growing season. When planting bare root roses, remove all wrapping and packing. Follow recommended practices for planting all trees and shrubs—use good topsoil, well packed around the roots and finish off with a good watering, Potted roses should have tine container slashed .in several places or removed completely at planting time. For best results, plant them without disturbing the soil ball, They also should he planted in good soil and watered well. Either potted or bare root roses transplant more easily early in the season. As growth commences, the planting of bare I root plants will be more difficult and chances of survival reduced. + + Girl Guide Cookies will be sold from door-to-door by the local Brownies and Guides on Saturday, May 13. (formerly of Clinton) have returned from a two-week winter holiday in Switzerland, They travelled on a charter which was arranged by the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs, staying mainly at Interlaken. The first few days were spent snowmobiling up to Habkern, a trip on the Schilthorn which is the longest cable way lift in the Alps. This is where the James Bond movie, "Her Majesty's Secret Service" was filmed. They rented motorized bikes (regular bicycles with small motors) which go about fifteen miles an hour, and spent two days up and down the mountains to Beatenberg and Grindelvald. By car, they visited France and Italy and Geneva. Larry and Marg took a nine hour journey by train through and around the mountains to Scuol Tarasp, the hometown of Larry's mother. It was springtime in Switzerland with the temperature ranging from 65 to 75 degrees. + + + Last week we had an enquiry from a reader about an article in the paper regarding lawns. The article stated that a guide for the care of lawns, by John Bradshaw, was available free of charge to anyone who would like one. We are happy to be able to tell you that there is a good supply of these guides at Clinton Farm and Garden Centre, Isaac Street, which carries most of the products recommended. on 5 year Debenture Investment Certificates You earn highest interest on all of The Municipal's Debenture Investment Certificates, Interest payable semi-annually or left to accumulate. MEMBER: CANADA DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION Use 2 buckets or boxes of sand as firing bases and set about 12 feet apart. Bury each firework half way down at a 10 degree angle away from spectators. A long ..piece of punk is an excellent lighter. Extend atarm's length to light firework and keep face averted. Keep a metal container partially filled with water close Records would indicate that Fireworks have been around for a long time. Their manufacture was known in Europe before the end of the 13th century and a formula for a type of firework was recorded in China in 1044 A.D. Often, the ancients used fireworks as weapons of war and the way some people treat them today, we wonder if this tendency has been altered to any great degree. Although rigid government controls have ensured removal of the most hazardous items from our marketplaces, it will also take generous applications of care and common sense to do the rest in eliminating needless injuries. Many families will attend community sponsored exhibition firework displays this Victoria Day and the Ontario Safety League agrees that it's probably the safest way to celebrate the occasion. Still, other families will try on the role of amateur pyrotechnician and host a fireworks party in their own backyard. If you're one of the latter, the League offers the following guidelines for a, safe and successful evening, Make sure your firing location is on your own property and does not pose a nuisance or threat to your neighbours. Check for overhead obstructions, such as wires and branches, Before dark, read the instructions on each firework piece and keep all fireworks in a box, making sure to close the lid after removal of each piece. by for disposal of used firework pieces, Be sure to keep young children away from firing points and under adult supervision, And above all, don't let that noisemaker, the firecracker, mar your celebration. It caused 81 percent of all the firework injuries recorded for Ontario last year. LAWSON and WISE 0Cont.nWlete insurance Service and Investments • 5 Rottenbury St., Phone 482-9644 J. T.
