LOWERING THE BOOM - - A 150-foot floating steel ice deflector has been installed at
Sarnia by Canadian National to protect its docks and rail barge equipment from ice drifting
down the St. Clair River, The 100-ton "boom" will be anchored at an angle to the current
to catch and deflect floating ice during the Spring breakup on Lake Huron. CN officials
expect the deflector will handle ice up to 600 feet in diameter and nine inches thick,
Because it is floating, the boom will not affect the ecology of the river, Here, four cranes
lower the boom into position.

TIPS FOR THE IMPULSIVE EATER
There is so much said about the compulsive eater — the person who
finds any and every occasion to indulge in excesses. But there is
another type of eater that I call the "impulsive eater",
This speed demon wolfs down food indiscriminately while doing
battle with his own built-in safety device, the time factor.
If you are- an "iroplusive eater", slowing down is the first step to
slimness. Think first, eat later. If you plan your meals and adhere to
the plan there is no room for errors.
Do yourself a favor by having all the food on the table at mealtime;
you will not be tempted to return to the kitchen for extras. -
Outwit morning snack-sneaking at the office. A too little, too early
breakfast invites mid-morning pitfalls when the coffee wagon comes
around. Take time to eat a balanced breakfast.
Another tip avoid afternoon letdown with a pick-me-up of
bouillon, salad, a gelatin dessert, hot beverage or fruit.
Solve the boob-tube dilemma! If television is making'you appetite»
addictiVe, be ready with a heaping bowl of munchables such as
celery, rosy radishes, cauliflovverettes or diced green pepper. .
Living with a "skinny" family can present a problem. Don't feed
your family what you would like to eat because you wind up eating
it — after all skinny people are just born weight watchers and haven't
the temptations you have.
Sleep walking may have headed you in the wrong direction. Try
loosening the light bulb in your refrigerator before bedtime. By the
time you stop to wonder what's wrong, You may be happily headed
back to dreamland, still on your weight watching programme. If
hunger persists, have a tall glass of diet pop and back to bed.
Taking-time to think helps to remove impulsive eating urges. And
-remember there may be a reason but never an excuse, so weight
a minute!

Ontario Safety League's
tips for parents
This tip for parents is passed

League. After yotir teenager has
been driving the family car, be
sure to readjust the rear-view
Mirror, the seat position, the
span of the seat belt, and the radio
station; then head for the nearest
gas station.
Maturity is a desirable quality
in drivers. But not necessarily in
tires. So don't take chances with
rniddleaged tired that are going
bald. Treadless tires may
function well when braking on dry
pavement, but stopping distance
lengthens frighteniegly in
slippery conditions, says the

As we grow older, our body

You can control overweight
Overweight is a problem that's
seen in practically every corner
of the globe. Its dangers have been
particularly advertised in North
America, and we have lots of good
reasons to respect the warning.

. In. almost every case,
dangerous excess weight is due to
overeating. There may be
modifying factors, but overweight
people are usually overweight
simply because they consume
more food than they need, ou the
wrong kind of food..
Perhaps your reason for
wanting to lose weight goes not
deeper than a desire to look
better, wear more attractive
clothes and be more admired. But
the benefits in health, increased
vitality and long life are
immeasurable.
Whatever your reason for
wanting to lose weight, you can get
thinner and stay thinner. And you
can do it without giving up the
pleasure of good and satisfying
foods. It's just a matter of
retraining your palate—and
thousands of people will tell you

the true taste comes through.
