Where there has been a serious infestation the previous season, these predators can be controlled by using dormant oil sprays in the early spring, says D. B. McNeill, horticultural specialist, Ontario Department of Agriculture and Food. The oil used is a mineral oil specially formulated for this purpose. It must be applied while the plants are dormant, before the buds start to grow in the spring. The oil covers the eggs of the mites and the scale of the scab insects which contains the eggs.
