THE EDITOR,,
After so much uninformed
comment on the Ulster situation,
your editorial in the Feb. 24th
News-Record, struck me as
refreshing and well-informed.
There are two points I would like
to make clear, since they have so
far escaped the attention they
deserve.
Firstly, Northern Ireland is an
integral part of the United
Kingdom, just as much as England
herself. Therefore, British
troops are not on foreign soil, as
many think, but in their own
country, Not only is it their right
to be in Northern Ireland in a
peacekeeping role, it is their duty
to be there.
Secondly, the Ulster situation
could be immeasurably worsened
by pulling the troops out. They are
there to protect Protestants and
Catholics alike, Apart from the
tragic "Bloody Sunday", the
restraint shown by British
soldiers in Ulster has been not
only remarkable, it has been
courageous.
Whatever the outcome of
Northern Ireland's present
troubles, the future of the country
will depend to a large degree on
careful handling by the British
government, Their task can he
made easier by favourable word
opinion and level-headedness by
the media of press and television.
In this respect, your editorial has
done it's own little hit to .ensurq„
common sense will prevail,
John L. Duddy,.

Sir, murder is an heinous
crime no matter who commits it.
but when it is executed under the
protection of a recognized army
uniform, is the crime any less
illegal, is the victim any less
dead?
I ask you, Sir, if the American
forces invaded and conquered
your land, are there not many in
this Great Land who would be
branded terrorists by the
invaders?
