Senior Redmen win again
Wrestlers fifth
BY NOLA LEE
On Friday, Feb. 11. the
C.H.S.S. wrestling team finished
fifth out of 10 schools in the
Huron-Perth finals. Exeter
placed first in the tournament.
Rick Shropshall placed first in the
157 lb, class. Tom Archibald,
Kevin Swan and Brenton Craig
finished third in their weight
divisions, while Digby Howse and
Paul Wheeler placed fourth,

A solid defensive effort earned
he Mustangs a big win over
Exeter Hawks last Sunday night.
the win evened the series (a best
if seven affair) at one game each,
Clinton's big line of Stu
Mustard, Bill Stirling and Ron
lraham returned to their early
season form when they lead the
eague in points,
Mustard was set up beautifully
iy Ron Graham after only one
ninute and two seconds of play in
he first period to put the
Mustangs on the scoreboard.
Chen it was Graham's turn to
;core on a powerplay with two
Exeter men in the penalty box.
rust before his shot went in,
Bustard and Stirling had had
:lear shots but John Hayter had
:icked them aside.
At 10:47 of the opening period,
:oath Bill Weber threw out his
ower line when Perry Stover
milt off for hooking. Less than a
ninute later Stirling hustled the
lick into the Exeter end, passed
iver to Mustard who then relayed
perfect pass across in front of
layter to Ron Graham who was
lying in from the side and
lammed the puck under Hayter
nto the net. The goal proved to be
he winner.
Clinton had the edge in play
'ver the opening period and goalie
'red German came up with some
reat saves. Exeter picked up six
enalties in the first period
ncluding a five-minute major to
3rian Bestard at 19:39. After
tilling off the major penalty,
Exeter came to life and took
advantage of two Clinton penalties
o close the score to 3-2.
With defenceman Gary
3ummings off for high sticking at
i:21, Exeter's Ron Lindenfield
'inished off a nice passing play by
3rian Campbell and Pete Glover
with a wicket shot into the far
-ight side of the net.
Again at 15:18 the Exeter
mwerplay produced a goal this.

linton's defence up the ice and
roke in for a shot from two feet
ut. The referees called three
penalties in the period, all to
Clinton. Throughout the period
Exeter bembarded German with
18 shots to only six for the Clinton
shooters at the other end. Goalie
German made the first of three
clear breakaway saves of big Bob
Rowe, Rowe had two more
breakaways in the third but found
German unbeatable.
The Mustangs reached down
and gave a little extra in the third
as Exeter tried everything to pull
out a tie. Rowe came out of the
penalty box and slipped behind
Jim Cameron and Bill McDougall
but German stopped him again.
Big John McKinley helped to
take off the pressure midway
through the third when he picked
up a loose puck in back of Hayter
and with his long reach the Exeter
defencedidn't know which way to
chase him. He tried to jam the
puck in but Hayter kicked it out.
On the play. defenceman Jim
Cameron had moved into the slot
and he stole the puck from an
Exeter stick and passed to Paul
Johnson. Johnson banged the puck
along the ice into the net for a big
insurance goal It was the first
goal of Johnson's playoff' action.
The big crowd had a taste of
playoff fever from that point on.
Exeter picked up four penalties in
three minutes and Clinton on. The
two goalies made some
unbelievable stops. First German
turned aside three straight
breakaways, then Hayter, lying
flat on the ice, raised his stick
enough to block a sure goal by
Gary Cummings.
Cummings, who had sat out for
six weeks because of a broken jaw
and Bill McDougall helped kill
three back-to-back penalties from
14:23 to 16:25.
Coach Weber alternated
Stirling and Mustard and Gord
Riley up front and used Zeke
Fremlin to give the defensive pair
a breather. With the return of
Cummings, to the lineup, Weber
has juggled his defence and now
has Cummings and Fremlin with
Jervis alternating with Fremlin
,and two rock and sock boys,, Bill
McDougall and Jim Cameron.
Even though these combinations
are extremely young in age, they
played like veterans on Sunday
night.
The defensive work and
German's hot goaltending was the
difference between the 4-2 win
and the 9-6 losS on Friday night
in Exeter.
Exeter outmusclecl the
Mustangs and outscored them by
one extra goal in each of the
periods. Assistant captain Stu
Mustard hit for four goals but it
was not enough. Linemate Ron
Graham assisted on four of the six
goals and scored one himself in
the second period. Winger Bill
Stirling scored the opening goal in
the first period and assisted on
one of Mustard's goals.
Clinton was down 5-3 going
into the third period when
Mustard wrapped in two goals to
tie the score. Exeter went ahead
on a fluke goal which bounced off
Greg Jervis when he tried to clear
it away. Brian Bestard also
scored four goals in the game
including the winner and the first
insurance goal.
The Mustangs could have pulled
the game out but lack of playoff
experience really showed late in
the game and early nervousness
by most of the team members
helped Exeter buildup a lead.
MANAGER'S NOTES BY
BERT: I must say I was proud of
the turnout at our first playoff
game on Sunday night. A good half
of the crowd was from Exeter but
with all the activities of the
Winter Carnival, I am sure many
of our potential fanS were just too
tired to come out Sunday. If the
series continues with the tempo of
the first two games, I expect to
see over 1000 fans at Our next
games, Let's get behind these
boys and give them your support.
This year the club is being
operated by the Minor Hockey
Association and is run completely
separate financially from the
miner teams. Something which
will come is the cheering on the
team. Exeter fans are pros. They
have had great successes in the
past five years with their juniors
and have built up quite a following.
This Friday night bring out the
cow bell8 and noise makers and
let's hear you.
