The Summerhill Ladies met
at the home of Vera Gibbings on
Jan. 12.
Ruth Jenkins opened the
meeting with a reading on "Stop
Being a Procrastinator". The
Creed and Lord's Prayer were
said in unison. The roll call was
answered by 22 members and
one visitor. The minutes. of the
previous meeting were read and
adopted. The treasurer's report
was given by Marianne
Colciough.
The senior members sent or
voiced their thanks for flowers
received at Christmas. The De
Ryter family sent a thank you.

United Church holds family night

The United Church family night
arid annual congregational
meeting was held on Friday night
at 7 p.m.
Rev, McDonald asked Grace
and over 100 enjoyed a bountiful
pot luck supper. After supper a
sing song was enjoyed while the
children retired to the sanctuary
wh ere Ian Hulley showed colour
films: Beaver Darn, The
Saddlemaker, Jackie Visits the
Zoo and Ti-Jean goes west.
Rev, McDonald opened the adult
meeting with prayer. Mrs, Edwin
Wood was appointed secretary.
The 1971 minutes were accepted
as printed in the report. The panel
discussed reports and answered
questions. Jim Jamieson gave
highlights for the sessions which
included the confirmation class,
vacation school and the elders
being given districts for
visitation.
Mrs, Gourley, church
treasurer, reported a successful
year. During the year repairs to
the roof, painting of the church
and installation of an underground
oil tank were undertaken. Mrs. E.
Wood, UCW treasurer reported
on the study of South America.
Mrs. Mac Sewers, councillor of
the Explorers, reported for
Christian Education saying there
are 17 members who collected for
U.N.I,C.E.F. and sold candy.
Sunday School superintendant
Dennis Penfound was absent but it
was reported that.95 are on the
roll with 24 teachers and
assistant teachers, Mrs. Harry
Lear, organist, was absent but
appreciation was shown for her
work.
The budget was read by Ken
Hulley and approved, Lorne
Flunking reported for the Life-
Love project. It was moved to give
12 units $600 to the world relief
and six units $300 each to
Hamilton Wesley House and
Wesley Centre where Rev.
Carson is in charge. Discussion
was held on buying a parking lot.
The committee to plan for
anniversary service is to be
similar to last year.
Garnet Wright reported for the
nominating committee.

' The January meeting of the S.S.
No. 4, Community Club was held
at Lula Merrill's home on Jan. 12,
The meeting was opened with
the Creed and the Lord's Prayer
followed with a poem
"Comparatively Speaking."
Alison Lobb, the secretary, and
Millie Lobb, the treasurer, read
their December reports and the
annual reports, Roll call was
answered by 15 members with
"My Christmas Gifts."
The members decided to give a
donation to The Ability Fund. The
February meeting will be held at
the home of Norene Tebbutt on
Feb. 2. The meeting closed with
the Mizpah Benediction.
The remainder of the afternoon
was spent quilting while Millie
Lobb told what she saw on her
recent trip to Miami.
Two interesting worthwhile
year terms were Lorne }Junking,
Jim Jamieson, Harry Lear and
Jack Medd. Stewards for a three-
year term are Jim Howatt, Bert
Lyon, Jim Mawing and Robert
Shaddick, For the Bible Society,
Don Buchanan and Mrs. John
Riley were nominated. Auditors
will be Wm. Leiper and Mary
Robinson, Delegate to the
Presbytery are Claire Vincent
and Bert Shobbrook.
Emerson Hesk moved a vote of
thanks to Rev, McDonald for his
leadership in the past year, The
meeting closed with prayer by
Rev. McDonald.
EXPLORERS AND MESSENGERS
The Messengers and leaders
Mrs, Ted Bunking and Mrs, Jim
Radford, the Explorers and their
leaders Mrs. Mac Sewers and
Mrs. Wilmer Glousher had their
church parade on Sunday morning
with an attendance of over 40. The
ushers were Barbara Glousher,
Kerrie Meed, Joan Mason and
GoldaSewers. All members of the
Explorers.
The Hi-C formed the choir with
Louise Lovett as organist. Elaine
Vincent and Ken Scott with guitars
played a number and Karen
Tyndall sang a solo.
Rev. McDonald's message was
"Growing a Christian".

Mrs. Mac Hodgert of Kirkton
spent Tuesday with her mother
Mrs. Ena Howatt.
Mrs. Allen Shaddick spent the
weekend in Toronto,
One hundred and thirty guests
attended the Huron County Beef
Improvement Association dinner
and meeting on Thursday, Jan. 20
at the Londesboro Hall, catered to
by the Women's Institute.
Sorry to report the death of Mr.
Armand (Mac) McCool of
Windsor, a former Hullett
township resident, a brother-in-
law of Mr. Hugh Millar and Mrs.
Frank Potter. Sympathy is
extended to his wife.
Mrs. John Snell Sr, is
convalescing at the home of her
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ray
Fisher near Carlow.
Mr. and Mrs. Bob Thompson
visited on Wednesday with her
attractions to visit are the Parrot
Jungle, on Old Cutler Road and the
Seaquarium, on Rickenbacher
Causeway, where you will see
Hugo and Lolita, the killer
whales. Souvenirs brought home
were shells and a Blue Claw Crab,
picked up on the beach at Cape
Florida, Key Biscayne, where
they went swimming; a large
coconut (the first several
members had seen) found in
Virginia Park; and the most
.treasured one, a Horseshoe Crab,
which is almost extinct.
After 10 days of sun and 80 to 85
degree temperature it seemed a
shame to leave and in the short
time of three hours fly back to a
chilly 25 degrees and blowing
snow; but winter isn't winter
without snow. It was NICE while it
lasted.
Lunch was served with Norene
Tebbutt and Edna Oakes assisting
the hostess.

Mrs. Evelyn Honking went to
Clinton hospital on Wednesday
evening. We hope she will soon be
home again.
Mr. Harry Lear is a patient in
Clinton Hospital since Wednesday
with a heart condition.

Shobbrook, who canvassed the
village last week for the Ability
Fund, express their thanks for the
contributions.
Rev. McDonald is on holidays
for the next three weeks when he
will be visiting friends in Texas
and Tennessee. Ian Hulley will
accompany him. We wish him a
happy holiday. Next service will
be Feb. 20, Those requiring a

The Magic Circle Unit of
Wesley-Willis United Church held
their New Year's meeting at Mrs,
Florence Oliver's home Tuesday
evening, Jan. 18. Mrs. Greta
Nediger opened with a poem "A
New Leaf."
Mrs. Oliver conducted the
devotion with a New Year theme.
Mrs. Mary Murch assisted by
Miss Mary Jamieson took the
topic and scripture readings
subject "A Search For Beauty,"
New Year's Prayer by Mrs,
Oliver.
Mrs. Bill Hearn was present
and favoured the ladies with two
solos accompanying herself on
the guitar. Mrs. Mowatt installed
the new officers for 1972 and

Stephen Baxter Stothers of
Lucknow passed away at
Wingham and District Hospital
on Wednesday, Jan. 12 in his
87th year.
He was a son of William and
Mary Stothers and was born in
Ashfield Township on June 12,
1885.
Mr. Stothers was twice
',married. He married Agnes
Cleghorn in October 1919. She
passed away in 1956.
In January 1962 he married
Elizabeth Stewart Rose, who
survives; also four daughters,
Mrs. W. A. (Agnes) Bradbury of
Yorkshire, England, Mrs, R.C.
(Elizabeth) Passmore of Ottawa,
Mrs. W. B. (Kathleen) Whale of
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Mrs.
J. D. (Ruth) Schultz of
Mississauga, a son Stephen of
Winnipeg, Manitoba, a stepson
Dan Rose of Ghana, Africa and a
brother Dr. C. E. Stothers of
Toronto.
Besides his first wife he was
predeceased by two sisters and
three brothers, Jessie A., Rachel
J., John C., W. Bailie, Isaac F.,
Steve, as he was familiarly
known, graduated from Ontario
Agricultural College in 1916 and
was an Agricultural
Representative for 34 years. He
opened the Huron County office
at Clinton in 1918; was
Agricultural Representative for
Essex County 1926 to 1932 and
was Representative for
Wellington County from 1932 to
1951. Following his retirement
he returned to Lucknow, his
home community. He acted as
secretary-treasurer for Canadian
Swine Breeders Association from
1950 to 1964,
In his earlier years he was an
active church worker; was a
charter member of the Arthur
Lions Club and at one time was
a Deputy District Governor.
Steve, as an active extension
worker for over 30 years, gave
help to many - County
Agricultural Groups. He assisted
with many School Fairs, Fall
Fairs and Short Courses and
helped organize some of the first
Junior Farmer Associations.
The funeral service was held
at MacKenzie Memorial Chapel,
Lucknow on Friday, Jan 14.

Young of Elora were ministers.
Temporary entombment was
at Dungannon Mausoleum.
Honourary pallbearers were

Thursday with Mrs. Lillie
Webster and Mr. Will Oovier.
The many friends of Kevin
Jewitt were pleased to see him
home and able to attend church on
Sunday, He has been in hospital in
Seaforth and London since an
accident in December.
Mr, and Mrs. Art Flunking of
Exeter visited on Sunday with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lorne
Honking.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shaddick went
to Glen Morris. on Saturday to
spend a week with their son, Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Shaddick and
Julianna.
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shobbrook
are spending this week at the
home of their daughter, Mr. and
Mrs. Ross Millson in Woodstock.

funeral home on Thursday
evening, Jan. 13.
FREDERICK STEWART SLAVIN
Frederick' Stewart Stavin of
Clinton died Tuesday, Jan. 18,
1972 in St. Joseph's Hospital,
London following a lengthy
illness. He was 66 years of age.
He was born in Kincardine on
March 3,1905, the son of the late
Janes and William Slavin. He
attended schools in Tuckersmith
township and was a farmer until
he was employed as a civil
servant at CFB Clinton. He was
married in Goderich in 1940 to
Rosella Elizabeth Shelton and the
couple lived at RR 2, Kippen until
moving to Clinton in 1952. His
wife survives him.
He was a member of Ontario
Street United Church.
He is survived by one son, John
Frederick of Lindsay and two
granddaughters Joanne and
Janice Slavin of Lindsay. Two
brothers, Glenn of RR 2 Goderich
and Thomas of Kippen also
survive, He was predeceased by
one sister, Ida in 1938 and one
brother, William in 1962.
Funeral service took place
from the Ball Funeral Home at 2
p.m., Friday, Jan. 21 with the
Rev. L. Lewis of Ontario St.
Church officiating. Interment was
in Clinton Cemetery.

Jacobi, Kippen; Campbell Eyre,
Hensall; Harry Brown, Clinton;
Wilson Tremeer, Kippen; Vern

Londesboro United Church,
Londesboro, was decorated with
baskets of mauve and white
mums and candelabra for the
candle-light wedding at which
Betty Jean MacGregor and Paul
Murray Southgate exchanged
wedding vows and rings. Rev.
McDonald, officiated at the
double-ring ceremony on Jan. 8,
1972.
The bride is the eldest
daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon MacGregor. The groom
is the son of Mrs. Elsie
Southgate, and the late William
Edward Southgate, of Seaforth.
The bride, given in marriage
by her father, wore a
floor-length white velvet dress
with empire waist accented by
bows, long sleeves and a chapel
train. She wore a blue garter
given to her by her aunt and an
heirloom locket. Her full-length
veil was held in place by a tiara
crown and she carried a white
bible with a single purple orchid
,
trimmed with white daisies and
white streamers.
Miss Ruth Anne MacGregor,
sister of the bride was maid of
honour. Bridesmaids were Miss
Carol Anne Southgate, Seaforth,
sister of the groom, and Mrs.
Mary Anne Smith, Dublin,
friend of the bride. All were
gowned alike in scooped purple
velvet bodices . and mauve
polyester crepe dresses with
sprigs of flowers in their hair and
carried small hand bouquets of a
single purple orchid.
The flowergirl was Janice
Knox, cousin of the bride. She
wore a floor-length, white velvet,
empire dress similar to the
bride's with short sleeves and
carried a cross of mauve
carnations and -white daisies.
Mr. Neil Wammes, Stratford
was the groomsman. Ushers were
Mark Smith, Dublin, and Bill
Southgate, brother of the
groom. Also in attendance were
the bride's grandfather, Mr. J.B.
Muir and grandmother, Mrs.
Viva MacGregor and the groom's
grandmother Mrs. W.J. Murray.
Wedding music was supplied
by Mrs. H. Lear, Londesboro,
and Mrs. S. Bryans,
aunt of the bride. Miss Mary Lou
MacGregor, sister of the bride,
sang "The Wedding Prayer",
"This is Our Day", and "Walk
Hand in Hand".
A reception was held in the
church parlor. The bride's
mother received guests in a lime
green brocade dress trimmed
with gold with black accessories.
Her corsage was red roses. The
groom's mother assisted wearin4
a deep purple crimplene dress
with white trim and black
accessories. Her corsage was
yellow roses. The headtable was
centred with a beautiful four
tiered wedding cake made by the
bride's mother. Miss Carol
Steepe, Stratford, assisted the
bride by handling the signing
'of the guest register and
wedding gifts.
Following the reception the
wedding party and guests
returned to the bride's parents
home for the evening.
For the honeymoon to
Northern Ontario the bride
chose to wear a deep purple,
Orlon knit, hot pant dress and
fur trimmed coat. She carried a
purple suede shoulder bag.
Mr. and Mrs. Southgate will
reside at R.R. 1 Clinton,
Prior to her wedding the
bride was honoured by showers
given her by Judy Jeffery and
Brenda Hodgert; Jean and Agnus
Leiper for the community; and
by the bride's relatives.
Guests were present from
Seaforth, Stratford, London, St.
George, Ingersoll, Kitchener,
Brampton, Mitchell, Clinton,
Goderich, Staffa, Brussels,
Dublin, Lakeside, Embro, and
Londesboro.
