Your local newspaper
I found the following in an old
issue of Ideals and wish to pass it on
to each of you as my Christmas
greeting. It was originally penned by
the magazine’s editor. John and I
wish you and yours a very Merry
Christmas.
“May the warmth and love that is
all around us at Christmas time…fill
your heart with hope and joy…and
shed inspiration and radiance over
you each day of the New Year that
lies ahead.”
Holidays play havoc with the
ordinary everyday things we all take
for granted so here’s a heads up.There will be no mail delivery onDec. 27, Dec. 28 and Jan. 3. Thosewill be taken as statutory holidays byCanada Post. There will be no delivery of TheLondon Free Press on either Dec. 25
and Jan. 1. It is my impression that
regular daily subscribers will get a
few additions in their Friday papers.
There will not be an issue of The
Citizen between Christmas and New
Year’s either.
The Hullett Central Public School
Christmas Concert has been put on
hold until January. They just missed
too many school days in the storms
to feel the concert was ready.
Moreover, although they did get two
days of school in before the break,
no one could be sure of the weather
when the decision was made. Watch
for the new date early in 2011.
For a variety of reasons, Tom and
Gloria McKay have once again
closed the village restaurant
effective Dec. 16. We are all sorry to
see them leave the village and wish
them well in the future.
LONDESBOROUGH UNITED
CHURCH
“Sing, O Sing This Blessed Morn”
was the choir anthem on Sunday,
Dec. 19 at Londesborough United
Church, the fourth Sunday of
Advent. Terry Fletcher lit the last
candle in the Advent wreath, the
candle of love.
When the children came to the
front for their time with Terry, he
talked with them about manger
scene set up on the communion
table. They knew it was the scene for
the birth of Christ and many of the
congregation acknowledged that
they had a similar setting in their
homes.
Eight hundred years ago, Terry
told the children, St. Francis of
Assisi, a monk living in a monastery,
wanted the folks of his parish to
understand what it might have beenlike on the night of Christ’s birth. Sousing the live people and animals heorganized the first manger scene in acave in the forest.Verses 18-25 of Matthew 1 speakof the events leading up to the birth
of Christ as prophesied. The
morning’s responsive psalm, Psalm
80 speaks of a nation’s restorationthrough God.Terry titled his message to theadults “Almost Time”. This is thelast Sunday of Advent; Christmas isstill a few days away; it is almosttime for the birth. He noted that time
is relative to the person waiting, for
some it goes slowly, for others it
hurries along. Patience in waiting forthe event brings its own rewards.Surely, he remarked, Mary andJoseph exhibited patience. Bothmust have been wondering if thepromise they had received from Godwas true. Was this really a special
child? The location of the birth was
Sit. Stay. Sing.
Londesborough United Church wrapped up its 150th year with its annual community
Christmas concert. There were over 20 performances throughout the night, including this duo
of Daisy and Jane. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
