For a lot of people Christmas is
gathering at a parent’s house, or a
grandparent’s house, having a dinner
with family and close friends and
doing some kind of gift exchange tomark the season. For me, well I have one Christmaslike that, and it’s wonderful, but I
also have a fairly unique family
Christmas for my dad’s side of the
family.
My father, who spent some timegrowing up in Londesborough, ispart of the Scott family, and it’s alarge one.
I remember, before I had hit the
double-digits celebrating Christmas
with my dad’s side of the family at a
relative’s house, but with his five
sisters, and each of them with
children, it wasn’t long before we
needed some place larger.
Fortunately most of the family
lives and works in Huron County,
and, as it is called the Heart of
Huron County, Clinton became a
logical location where we could
meet and celebrate Christmas.
And so it came to pass that we
chose Clinton, and, through a family
tie, we were able to rent the Clinton
Arena every Boxing Day to enjoy
both a Christmas celebration around
a tree, and one around centre ice.
I wasn’t privy to the choices that
lead to us celebrating in the way we
do, and, given that this was more
than 10 years ago and I would have
been a pre-teen or younger, I
probably wasn’t very concerned
with them. All I cared about was the
fact that my large family got
together and I could spend as much
time as I wanted skating and playing
hockey. So while other people may lace uptheir boots, shovel out their cars, andlook forward to a warm evening
around a fireplace, or a television, or
a card table, I find myself getting my
skates sharpened, lacing them up,
deciding whether I need hockey
gloves or winter gloves, re-taping
my stick and preparing for that first
long ice-grinding stride free of theencumbrance of hockey equipment. In my youth, and my athleticprime, I found myself playing hard
to out-skate the ‘older players’ like
my father, but as time has gone on
I’ve lost that competitive edge when
it comes to the Christmas hockey
game. It’s a fun time to bond with
