North Huron’s Warden North Huron Reeve Neil Vincent ran unopposed for the office of Huron County Warden at Huron County Council’s inaugural meeting on Dec. 8, receiving the chain of office and his warden’s pin from former warden Bert Dykstra. Vincent signed his oath as Chief Administrative Officer Larry Adams looked on. Vincent first broke into municipal politics in 1974 when he was just 22 years old. He was elected as a councillor on East Wawanosh Township Council and that was the first of four two-year terms that Vincent would serve, before serving one three-year term as East Wawanosh Reeve. After stepping away from politics after that term, Vincent focused his attention on agriculture, serving on several agriculture boards, including serving as a director for the Ontario Federation of Agriculture and as a delegate for Gay Lea Foods. “People knew I was someone who would speak up on different issues and that I wasn’t afraid to ask questions,” he said of his years with the various agriculture organizations. It was four years ago that Vincent decided to return to municipal politics, ousting North Huron Reeve Doug Layton in the 2006 election, before returning to the Reeve’s office by acclamation earlier this year. “I’ve always been a student of politics,” he said. Closer to home, commentary on the council floor will be put in Riach’s capable hands Vincent says, ensuring North Huron residents that they have not lost his voice on the floor just because he is now the Huron County Warden. He also says that North Huron residents should feel honoured that one of their representatives is now heading the county. Going forward, Vincent says that while there are many new faces at the Huron County Council table, he doesn’t expect too many snags. If anything, he said, he expects that councillors who have been there before may persist with issues they have felt strongly about over the years. He says that new councillors generally listen and observe for a while before asserting themselves. Seasoned councillors, however, know the ropes and aren’t afraid to speak their minds. “I think some of the old councillors who have issues close to their hearts might be more interesting,” he said. “They’re experienced and that might make me think as to how to handle their requests.” Vincent also said that, as it always is, the budget will be a major focal point next year. “We are going to have to fight to hold the budget,” he said. “But I’m really looking forward to the challenge.” Business Directory Affordable CAR AND TRUCK RENTALS Large & Small Trucks fridge carts - piano dollys- moving blankets Complete Selection of Cars Our rates qualify for insurance replacement Passenger Vans full size or mini STRICKLANDS 344 Huron Rd. 519-524-9381 GODERICH 1-800-338-1134 TRUCK & TRAILER SERVICE Hours: Mon. - Fri. 7-5; Sat. 8-1 • Light Truck, Automotive Repairs & Certifications • Truck, Trailer & Bus Safety Certifications • All Heavy Truck & Trailer Repairs BLYTH 519-523-9681 1-800-276-4163 24 hours 519-524-0599 Truck & Trailer Repair Facility Supplier of quality parts for trucks, trailers & equipment ~ Light truck & automotive parts ▼▼▼▼▼▼ NEW CONSTRUCTION AGRICULTURAL RENOVATIONS RESIDENTIAL Call 519-527-1538 Tarion Home Warranty Builders ZAHND REAL ESTATE LTD.
