M-T inaugural address
focuses on budget
A need for both budgetary
restraint and an emphasis on
economic development was
highlighted when Mayor Paul
Gowing made his inaugural address
at Morris-Turnberry Council, Dec.
7.
“We must not forget responsibility
to our electors,” he told council. At
the same time council needs to
promote economic development, he
said.
Gowing felt council had a
mandate to explore the ward
structure and the size and makeup of
council.
Jason Breckenridge, leading vote
getter in Turnberry Ward, was
named deputy-mayor.
In her invocation following the
swearing in of council, Dr. Karen
MacRae from Bluevale Presbyterian
Church, told councilors each of
them brought unique skills to the
job.
“You were chosen from among
the people who ran (for office) to
provide leadership.
“Within you is a sense of integrity.
Make sure in the decisions you
make that you can live with
yourself,” she said.
She told councilors not to think
they could do too much and to be
ready to delegate to the person with
the skills and talents to get the job
done.
She told them to see the
possibilities. “You made promises
and had dreams,” she said. “Hold
onto those dreams.”
