Final early-bid dues winner chosen On Oct. 29, a group of areabroomball players, naming theirteam The South Western OntarioLoonie Canucks, headed off for 10days to Innsbruck, Austria to play at the World Broomball Championship. Women from the Walton area included Cassie Fischer, Jenna Fischer, Sandra Zwep, Jodi Houston, Kandice Jacklin, Peggy Procter and Kendra Cardiff. The rest of the team members were from the Lucknow and Listowel areas. They were coached by Mark Pennington of Brussels. The girls flew out of Toronto on a direct flight to Munich, Germany. They went from the airport to Munich via subway – a mere feat in itself carrying 110 lbs. of luggageincluding their large broomball bagsand sticks. They stayed at a hotelnear the train station the first nightso they would be ready to board the train to Innsbruck first thing the next morning. Off to Innsbruck the next day, they travelled on a lovely picturesque two-hour train ride seeing sights that would never be seen in Ontario. Beautiful mountains adorned with castles and architectural buildings, and amazing landscapes and snow-capped mountains. Once in downtown Innsbruck, they took cabs to Aldrans, a 15- minute drive to what they would call home for 10 days. Their accommodations were in anauthentic Tyrolian Inn, with anincredible view in each and everyroom. Monday was registration dayand a day for everyone to get acquainted with the area. They rented two large vans for transportation and four of the girls were drivers. The drivers did amazingly on the fast streets and roundabouts. Tuesday was the first day of the tournament. The Canucks played nine games of broomball in four days. Along with other Canadian and U.S. teams, the Canucks played Japan, Australia and Italy. The games took place in Innsbruck at the Olympia World Arena, this was an Olympic-sized ice surface that meant a lot of running. They also played in Telfs and Gotzen, both a 25-minute drive from Innsbruck. During their stay, some of the girls went on tours of the Swarovski crystal plant, a silver mine, a zoo and lot of shopping in Innsbruck’s beautiful downtown shops. The food was excellent and the beer quite tasty. The people of Innsbruck were very friendly and they found that Austria was an extremely clean and safe place to be. At night although everyone seemed to be quite tired from all the broomball, theymanaged to go out to some of theplanned events and socialize withsome of the other teams, as well asthe locals. The banquet was held on the Saturday night and although the team did not win many games and did not receive a trophy, the Loonie Canucks coach Mark Pennington won the “Coach of the Tournament” trophy. The team was so very proud of this and celebrated with him thoroughly. He had done a terrific job of coaching. Sunday was a free day for the team to do whatever they wanted. On Monday morning, most of the Canucks were getting into taxis to head to the train station to then catch a train to Munich and then home to Canada. Jenna Fischer and Kendra Cardiff stayed on for four more days to meet up with Kendra’s nephew Sean from Calgary who was staying in Austria with a friend for a month.Jenna, Kendra and Sean ended upgoing to Salzburg for three days andtoured around that area with eachother and then headed back home to Canada on the Friday. All the Canucks agreed that it was a trip of a lifetime and that they all had had a most wonderful time – lots of broomball and lots and lots of fun and terrific memories. The team members worked hard at raising funds for this fantastic trip by hosting a breakfast at Funfest, selling tickets on variety of prizes and selling chicken. They appreciate everyone’s support and recommend travelling to this beautiful area of the world. They met great people from other countries participating in the tournament, as well as some very interesting local people. The girls came away with many new friends and a duffel bag full of memories. A dish here, a cup up, a pot rinsed and a lid moved over – it was a minuet. Constant talk, lots of laughs, a tea towel flipped, water running, parts moving, the people almost dancing as the common goal was in sight. Yes even the characters were like the elves, calling our sweetly spookums, honey bunch and other endearments as the work of the hour was done. Oh yes there are angels and elves all around us.
