The Blyth Beaver Scouts and Cub Scouts will be collecting goods for the North Huron Community Food Share during a door-to-door food drive on Tuesday, Dec. 14 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Donations can also be dropped off in advance of Dec. 14 at 174 Dinsley St. across from Trinity Anglican Church. “Christmas is about gi ving and helping others who are less fortunate and we hope to teach the members of our Beaver Colony this by collecting food and toiletries for the North Huron Community Food Share,” says Beaver Scout leader Sarah Caldwell. Joyce Johnston, manager of the North Huron Community Food Share said this Christmas the need is greater than ever. The Food Share serves approximately 82 families or 215 people a month. Between June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2010 the Food Share helped feed 2,761 people, an increase of 38 per cent over the year before. The North Huron Food Share serves the areas of Blyth, Lucknow, Wingham, Teeswater, Gorrie, Wroxeter, Fordwich, Brussels and all areas in between. Some suggestions Johnston has for donations to the food bank include: school lunch items such as pudding cups, granola bars, drinking boxes, personal toiletry items such as toothpaste, soap and deodorant. She also encourages people to donate what they themselves would like to eat. It’s hard enough, after all, just to pick up the phone or walk through that door the first time. The relationships we’ve built over the years with our clients – and their families – will continue, but with improved and expanded access to services.” Choices for Change offers free, confidential addiction counselling for youth, adults, older adults and street youth. They also provide one- on-one counselling in every high school in Stratford and Perth County.
