Potential master fire plan pleases Auburn
Residents were happy to hear the
news last week that the Central
Huron Council has asked its Fire
Chief Steve Cook to approach all ofthe county’s fire chiefs aboutworking on a master fire plan. This involves a study that wouldtake into account all of the factorswithin the county that should
determine appropriate services in
each municipality. Despite the issue
of municipal responsibility with
regard to the Fire Marshal’s Act, as
was discussed at the recent meeting
at the Auburn Hall, it is hoped that
all of the fire departments in the
county will participate.
A reminder to all who will be
attending services on Sunday at theAuburn Knox United Church – Dec.5 is White Gift Sunday. A cashdonation or a new toy for the Huron-Perth Children’s Aid Society or anon-perishable food donation for
the food bank would be greatly
appreciated.
The Auburn Horticultural Society
will be hosting a community
potluck dinner on Monday, Dec. 6 at
the Auburn Hall in honour of its
60th anniversary.
Social starts at 6 p.m. and dinner
begins at 6:30 p.m. The
Horticultural Society will beproviding refreshments and cakeand there will be many door prizesfor all who attend. Bring yourfavourite dish and join thecelebration.
The Christmas Bazaar at the
Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church is set for Dec. 4
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Come and
check out what local merchandisers
and representatives have to offer. It
is a great opportunity to do some
Christmas shopping as well as
support local economy.

PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN
Black elected Director at Large of OFA
Wayne Black’s work for farmers
in Huron County is about to take a
big step upwards with his
appointment to Director at Large for
the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture (OFA).
Black, who has previously been
the President of the Huron
Federation of Agriculture (HFA),
was startled by the support he
received for the position.
“I [was] surprised by not only the
support from across all of Ontario,
but also the expectations prior to me
being elected” he said in an e-mail to
The Citizen.
During a later interview, Black
explained that the OFA has 15 zones
across Ontario, but is led by a board
of 18 directors.
“The director for Huron Perth, for
example, is Joe Vermunt,” he said.
“Directors at Large are similar to
those who represent zones, but bring
the concerns of all [Ontario
agriculture stakeholders].”
Black said that he received the nod
for his first foray into the OFA for
his passion about agriculture and his
down-to-earth attitude.
“I know that the world doesn’t
revolve around me and I’m
passionate about agriculture,” he
said. “That, and my speech to the
board about passion and dedication
to agriculture, was what lead to me
being nominated.”
Black has already been baptized
by fire, having his first meeting in
November. He found it similar to his
experiences with the HFA.
“It’s similar to the HFA meetings,”
he said. “We deal with a bigger
scale.”
Challenges aren’t more difficult
with that scaling, Black said, but
different.
“We have a much wider focus,” he
said. “We have so many issues to
deal with and support. It won’t be
harder or easier, but my experience
with the HFA will definitely benefit
the OFA board.”
Some of the issues that Black will
be focusing on as part of the OFA
include sustainable farming,
business risk management, and
wind turbines, but he hopes
his new position will give
him the clout to help affect more
change.
“We’re dealing with more MPs
and MPPs, which will help us really
address the issues at a provincial
level instead of a county level,” he
said.
As part of the OFA, Black hopes to
be the voice of the younger farmer,
and the diversified farmer, as he has
experience as both.
“I’m the newest board member in
the past two years, at least,” he said.
“And I hope to give a voice to
younger farmers, and diversified
farmers, as that is what I have
experience with.”
