Happy Gang Seili questions applicantsof Huron Heritage Fund Several projects receiving funding from the Huron Heritage Fund raised eyebrows at the final session of the current term of Huron County Council on Nov. 24. Huron East Mayor Joe Seili had raised the issue of criteria for the funding at an earlier meeting and the approval was tabled, scheduled to return at the Nov. 24 meeting after Beth Ross, director of cultural services, did some further research. He said he felt the money shouldn’t be given to projects like plays and history books (both of which were approved this year) and rather projects like preserving historic structures within Huron County. Initially, the recommendation was tabled because Seili said he thought Morris-Turnberry had received funding for its history book once before and it was slated to be approved again this year. After looking into it, however, Ross said the book had not received any previous grants from the Huron Heritage Fund. While the criteria had been changed several times over the years, there was nothing in the current guidelines that would restrict books and plays from being approved for the funding. Soon-to-be Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan shared Seili’s concern, saying that it wasn’t the book that concerned him as much as the play (Narcisse, a play commissioned by the St. Joseph and Area Historical Society). Seili agreed, saying that Huron County has plenty of playwrights who may be struggling to pay bills as they write plays who aren’t being subsidized by the county. MacLellan said he felt the book was a reasonable request because once it’s printed, it can be put on a shelf, preserved and referred to over the years, whereas with a play, it’s produced and then that’s the end of it. Central Huron Deputy-Reeve John Bezaire argued that culture is one of Huron County’s four pillars and that it doesn’t receive anywhere close to the amount of attention that the other three pillars receive. “We did put forward four pillars and we felt it was important enough to make it the foundation on which we wish to build our county,” he said. “This is a small investment compared to what we’ve dedicated to the rest of our pillars.” The recommendation was approved, authorizing $20,000 in grants to six projects that were approved. Three of the projects were books, including the Morris-Turnberry history book, a 175th anniversary history book for Port Albert, a Goderich Township families book for Alison Lobb and one was a play, Narcisse for the St. Joseph and Area Historical Society.
