After a meeting with
representatives from North Huron
Township Council, members of
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
(ACW) Township Council council
were resigned to the fact that they
would most likely need to change
the fire coverage agreements to offer
the best service to residents of
Auburn.
“I think we have to face the fact
that making a deal with North Huron
may be the only viable option there
is,” Councillor Doug Miller said. “It
makes no sense to hire Central
Huron’s fire department to drive
through an area North Huron covers
to put out fires.”
Miller added that having
neighbours on different sides of the
street being serviced by different fire
departments doesn’t make sense.
Councillor Barry Millian was
ready to work with North Huron as
he believes council had been misled
earlier.
“[ACW council] made a decision,
and if we change our mind, it might
hurt our credibility,” he said. “But
we were told that people in the
Auburn area would have the same
level of protection they have always
had and we’ve since learned that
isn’t true.”
Millian went on to state that ACW
councillors were led astray, and that
he wanted the issue to be closed for
the sake of the people in Auburn. He
also said that the amount of money
was trivial when compared to the
loss of life that Auburn residents fear
could happen.
“How much less protection is
there? We don’t know, and for
$7,000, I don’t want to find out,” he
said.
Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek stated
that the decision before was a
monetary one, but that all the
decisions they make usually revolve
around that.
“Money’s always the issue,” he
said. “If money wasn’t an issue,
we’d build our own fire hall in
Auburn.”
ACW is currently waiting to hear
back from North Huron on what
options they can negotiate.
