The Citizen, 2010-09-30, Page 8PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2010.Ironmen extend season-starting winstreak to fiveThe Wingham Ironmen remainundefeated after three weekends ofplay in the Western Junior 5 C
Hockey League.
After scoring a 7-2 decision over
the Goderich Sailors on Friday
evening at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, the Ironmen
completed the four-point weekend
on Saturday in Mitchell with a 5-3
win over the Hawks.
It took a while for the Ironmen to
get going as they only held a 1-0
lead after 20 minutes of play.
Wingham outscored Goderich 4-1 in
the second period to take a
commanding lead. The Ironmen
wrapped up the win in the third
period, by outscoring the Sailors 2-
1.
Following Friday evening’s win
over Goderich, Ironmen coach Chad
Haggitt said it was a good game. He
indicated it was tough to get up for a
team like Goderich.
“These are games we should win,”
he said.
Getting two goals from defence
helped, he said, as it makes it
tougher on the team’s opponents.
Graham Ashcroft gave the
Ironmen a 1-0 lead in the first
period, scoring an unassisted
marker.
Wade Stephenson, with help from
Ashcroft gave Wingham a two-goal
advantage at 1:04 of the second
period. Josh Martel got one back forthe Sailors just over a minute later.Justin Jacklin scored at 6:40,Adam Corbett scored on the powerplay at 8:52 and Ryan Chambersscored at 9:48 of the second
period to give the Ironmen a 5-1
advantage.
Tyler Kellum made it 6-1 at 5:31
of the third period. Sam Feagan
scored Goderich’s second goal and
Aaron Armstrong concluded the
scoring as he redirected a point shot
from Collin Whitfield. At first they
announced that Whitfield at scored
the goal.
Following the contest, Whitfield
said it was a good defensive team
effort that limited Goderich to just
20 shots.
According to Whitfield, thegameplan of the Ironmen was tolimit the Sailors’ offence while theIronmen applied a lot of offence onGoderich. “It was pretty awesome,”he said of the goal first creditted to
him.
He said he always tries to get his
shots low and on net, so they can be
deflected or hit somebody’s skate.
Wingham outshot the Sailors 40-
20.
The Ironmen play two home
games this weekend, as they put
their undefeated season on the line.
They host the Kincardine Bulldogs
for the first time on Friday,
beginning at 8 p.m. On Saturday,
they host the Hanover Barons,
beginning at 7 p.m.

Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club wrapped up this past week with
another very successful fall
barbecue.
Over 500 hungry patrons gathered
on the curling rink floor to enjoy a
ham and beef supper catered by Jeff
Cardiff. It was great to see all the
members, family and friends gather
together in support of the club.
On Wednesday, Sept. 22, the
senior men hit the links. Bill
Johnston was low net winner with
Lloyd Lamont placing second and
Grant Currie coming in third. Doug
Neil and Brian Skinn tied for low
gross for the morning.
The Thursday night men had 22
golfers out on a cool night. Trevor
Hopf was the big winner for the
night winning closest to the pin,
longest putt and was tied with Dan
McBurney for low gross honours.
Doug Rathwell sank a long putt on
the eighth hole to pick up the other
prize.
On Saturday, the club hosted three
separate tournaments on a cool, wet
day. The Soers group got things
started in the morning with 22
golfers fighting hard to stay dry,
playing nine holes before joining
together in the golfers’ lounge for
lunch.
The Upper Deck Youth Club
kicked off the afternoon playing 18
holes followed by a roast beef
supper in the dining lounge. The 20
gals and guys had a mixed bag of
weather, but it didn’t seem to
dampen their spirits as
they got together for a very worthy
cause.
The John Beldman group wrapped
up the day with 28 golfers. Again the
weatherman did not co-operate but
the group managed to play nine
holes and enjoy each other’s
company.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club board and staff would like to
thank barbecue chairman Lloyd
Morrison and all the volunteers for
their hard work in making this year’s
fall barbecue a great success. The
many volunteers should help to
make the club a viable business for
years to come.
Howdy!
Ladies slo-pitch held its year-end tournament in Brussels
over the weekend, bringing back the tradition of costumes
and themes to each team uniform. The weekend saw teams
of ninjas, doctors and nurses and even cowboys. The
tournament was won by the RBIs in the A division and by
the Bookies in the B division. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Swing and a miss
With the season drawing to a close, Brussels slo-pitch
teams took to the field for one last time. The Leftovers, seen
here taking on the Blasters, won the year-end tournament.
