The Saugeen Maitland Bantam
AA Lightning started their season
with a second place finish at the
Oshawa Fall Classic Tournament.
The Lightning went 4-1, beating
every competitor except Kitchener,
whom they faced off against in the
finals.
The new Saugeen Maitland
Bantam AA squad started their
weekend with Kitchener. It was fast-
paced with plenty of action in both
ends but Saugeen started with a nice
goal by Kailyn Soers. Late in the
second period Kitchener got a goal
from Shea Tiley and with one minute
left and Saugeen down a player,
Kitchener scored and the Lightning
ran out of time. The final score was
2-1.
The second game was early in the
morning against Oshawa with the
girls all rested up. They were able to
keep the puck in Oshawa’s end most
of the game. Goals were scored by
Hailey Herman with two, Lexi
Smith with two, Shannon O’Reilly
and Taylor Weber, one each. Assists
went to Abbey Hertel, Ciara Lark
and Becky Bulls.
With a big rest, the girls hit the ice
against Belleville. Belleville was
strong and determined to win, but
Saugeen came out on top with a 4-2
win. Now moving into the finals and
with no rest in between, the
Lightning stayed strong and had a
hard game with 53 shots on the
North York goalie. The Lightning
won 4-1.
Hailey Duplantis played great in
net and had a nice win to celebrate
her birthday.
In the finals, the girls were up
against Kitchener again and they
came out and scored a nice one by
Miranda Lantz. It was another
action-packed game, but Kitchener
was able to score one more than
Saugeen Maitland giving them the
win.
Kitchener won the tournament, but
Saugeen Maitland were proud of

Bantam Lightning crack top four in tournament
The Saugeen Maitland Bantam A
girls Lightning travelled to Toronto
to compete in the Willowdale Red
Wings tournament.
The lightning managed to go 2-2-
1 in the tournament, finishing in the
top four of the 15 team tournament.
They opened the tournament on
Friday afternoon against the
Etobicoke Dolphins. The girls took
it to the Dolphins from the beginning
of the game. Jordyn Sholdice of
Brussels opened the scoring in the
first with an unassisted goal.
Sholdice then added a second goal in
the third period. Cassidy Mason got
the helper on that goal. The game
ended with the Lightning coming
out on top 2-0. Rebecca Ropp got
the shutout.
The girls then faced the London
Devilettes on Friday evening. It was
a sloppy game with the action going
back and forth. Scoring for the
Lightning were Rebecca Rier with a
pair and Jaime Van Loon with one.
Assists went to Reeves and Mason.
The game ended in a 3-3 tie.
On Saturday morning, the girls
then took on the North York Storm.
The girls looked much stronger but
still had to settle for a 2-2 tie. Tori
Terpstra scored both goals, with
Reagan Kaufman and Avery Reeves
each earned one helper.
The girls needed a strong game on
Saturday afternoon if they wanted to
make it to the semi-finals on Sunday
morning. The Barrie Sharks didn’t
stand a chance with the Lightning
showing no mercy. The final score
was 6-1. Scoring for the Lightning
were Kaufman with three goals and
two assists, Terpstra with two goals
and one assist, Ally Spielmacher
with one goal and two assists,
Rier and Van Loon with one assist
each.
That win put the girls into the
semi-finals Sunday morning against
the Aurora Panthers. It was a well-
played game with each team taking
turns putting the pressure on. The
Panthers took the lead with two
quick goals in the second period.
The Lightning did not give up and in
the third their hard work paid off
when Sholdice found the back of the
net. That was as close as it got, with
the Panthers adding an empty net
goal.
The girls’ next home game is on
Oct. 2 in Wingham at 6 p.m. against
the Sarnia Sting, then they travel to
Sarnia for a rematch on Oct. 3.
The University of Waterloo’s
women’s varsity hockey team, The
Warriors, played host to the Saugeen
Maitland Midget AA Lightning this
past weekend in a friendly
exhibition game.
Playing for the Warriors this year
are Saugeen Maitland alumni Ona
Mezenberg, Lindsey Ceasar,
Kathryn Roy and Kate Wagner. The
Waterloo squad is coached by
Geraldine Heaney, Canadian
Women’s National hockey team
veteran and a recent inductee into
the International Hockey Hall of
Fame.
The Warriors scored the first goals
of the game. Then, late in the first
period, Saugeen’s Brooklyn Irwin
made it 2-1 with assists going to
Nicole Marriage of Clinton and
Hannah Davidson.
The game remained a closely-
contested match until midway
through the third period when
Waterloo scored a shorthanded goal
followed up by a nifty goal by
Mezenberg to close out the score
with the university winning by a
score of 4-1.
