Elections are quickly approaching
and Blyth ward incumbent
Councillor David Riach has already
expressed his interest to run again
through filling out his nomination
form.
“I have more to learn and so much
more to accomplish,” he said in a
phone interview with The Citizen.
Riach was one of two members of
Blyth Ward called upon to sit on the
North Huron Township Council
approximately one year ago, the
other being Brock Vodden.
“I’ve only been at this for a year,
so I’ve got a lot of projects I want to
continue to work towards,” he said.
Riach said that his platform
essentially runs on bringing viable,
sustainable development to North
Huron, and specifically, Blyth.
“My interest is in the community,”
he said. “I want to promote the
growth of local businesses, help
manage the resources we have and
help promote Blyth within North
Huron, and North Huron as a viable
community.”
Riach said he could fall back on
the standard “I want to keep taxes
down and reduce spending,” but he
has come to realize that simply isn’t
a promise anyone can make.
“We need the taxes to run the
projects that enhance the lives of
North Huron residents,” he said,
adding that he would advocate
practising honest spending.
“I’m in it for the community, to
promote both North Huron and
Blyth,” he said.
Specific projects that Riach has
worked on include the Emergency
Services Training Centre (ESTC) in
Blyth.
“When I started, the ESTC was a
bit of a dream,” he said. “Where it
has gotten to in just a year is great,
and I want to see it through.”
Business Improvement Area
associations for both Blyth and
Wingham are also projects that
Riach wants to focus on.
“Working through council I want
to establish a BIA in Blyth and,
eventually, in Wingham,” he stated.
Riach said that the year he has
been on council has been
educational and interesting.
“It’s been an interesting year in
which I’ve learned a lot,” he said.“I’m glad to have done it and I’m
glad to continue on.”
Riach will be running as a
councillor and hopes support will
come from the community as he
continues to represent Blyth in the
decisions North Huron Township
Council makes.
“I’ll keep doing my job,” he said.
In addition to Riach filing for
renomination, Councillor Alma
Conn of Wingham ward has also
been nominated to run for her
current position.

Only slightly evil
(J.R. Miller, “Christian Essentials” 1904)
“Avoid every kind of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22
Some professors are accustomed to think of some things as ‘only slightly evil’, while
other things are considered as most vile in their eyes.
They appear to think, that if they keep themselves form the worse kind of sins — then
they need not be so watchful against the minor forms of evil. They will not lie, nor steal,
nor swear, nor do other things which would brand them as ‘wicked’ in the eyes of the
community. But meanwhile they are satisfied to be ungentle, unkind, selfish, bad-
tempered, and worldly!
But Paul’s exhortation is, “Avoid every kind of evil.” We are not to pick out certain
things and condemn these alone as evil, abstaining from them; meanwhile indulging in
pet vices and sinful habits of our own. Whatever is sinful in even the slightest way —
is to be avoided!
