Blyth-born classic
returns to the stage
With a lifetime foundation built on
academic degrees in Art and Art
Education, long time and well
known Blyth area resident Ron
Walker has become a pillar of the art
community in Huron County. He
returns for yet another exhibit as
special visiting artist at the Goderich
Co-op Gallery. His July show,
derived from sketches following a
recent adventure in Turkey and
Israel, features mixed media and oil.
It promises to present an intriguing
visual insight into the complexities
of life and its mysteries in the
Middle East.
Walker is well known for his role
in establishing and nurturing the Art
Gallery at the Blyth Centre for the
Arts. He taught art for many years
throughout Huron County. He has
been a supporter of the annual
Latimer art show hosted by the
Huron County Museum where and
his award-winning work has been
selected for placement in the Huron
County Art Bank.
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
in 1937, Ron attended the University
of Saskatchewan, the Regina
College School of Art, the
University of Toronto, and the
Ontario College of Education
emerging from academia with
degrees in English, Art, and Art
Education.
In Toronto, in the 1960s and
1970s, he taught Art and English
with the North York Board of
Education, and maintained a Queen
Street studio loft with his printmak-
ing wife, Beverley. He has exhibited
prints, paintings and drawings in
various venues, juried shows, and
with the Merton and Gadatsy
Galleries.
In 1974 he and his wife moved to
the Blyth area. They renovated a
farmhouse from the 1850s, built a
separate studio amongst a forest of
pines, became passionate forester-
gardeners and started raising a fami-
ly. In 1977 he returned to teaching
art and continued as an art educator
until retiring in 1996.
He is represented regionally at the
Art Exchange, London, Ontario and
locally through Elizabeth’s Gallery
in Goderich.
His Middle East presentation will
be available throughout July at the
Goderich Co-op Gallery on
Courthouse Square to complement
the summer exhibits by the 20 par-
ticipating artists in the Co-op group.
Bordertown Café by Kelly Rebar
returns to the Blyth Festival stage
after premiering in Blyth in 1987.
The production opens at the Festival
on July 2.
Bordertown Café is a much-loved
Canadian classic. It follows the story
of seventeen-year-old Jimmy, his
single mom, outspoken American
grandmother and quiet grandfather
who live and work together in a
small café on the edge of the
Alberta/Montana border. When
Jimmy learns that his father wants to
take him to live in Wyoming, life in
the little café turns upside down. A
funny and poignant battle of genera-
tions rages as a prairie kid takes his
first real steps towards life in the
adult world.
Bordertown Café was commis-
sioned by the Blyth Festival in 1986
and premiered the following summer
under the direction of Katherine
Kaszas. Kaszas, the festival’s artistic
director from 1984-1990 returns this
year to direct the revival.
The cast of Bordertown Café
includes returning company mem-
bers Michelle Fisk, Marion Day and
Brad Rudy. Nathan Carroll, a
recent graduate from George
Brown Theatre School in Toronto,
also joins the cast to make his pro-
fessional debut with the Blyth
Festival.
Preview performances of
Bordertown Café run June 30 - July
1, prior to the official opening on
July 1. Bordertown Café plays at the
Blyth Festival in repertory until
August 14.
