WE CAN DO IT ALL!
Ray Huether is ready to play for
the Ontario Hockey League’s
Saginaw Spirit, he just has to make
it through training camp.
A member of the “AAA” Huron-
Perth Minor Lakers,
Londesborough-area resident
Huether was drafted in the fifth
round, or 83rd out of 300 draft spots,
to the Spirit in the OHL Draft on
May 1, and is looking forward to
September 1 tryouts.
The draft draws players from
across Ontario and some of the
northern United States, providing a
drawing pool in the tens of
thousands.
“It feels good,” Huether said. “I’m
excited for tryouts.”
Huether made it through the
rookie tryout camp, held in early
May, along with fellow Laker
draftee Jake Ringuette from
Goderich.
The pair are part of a club-high
seven players that were drafted from
the Lakers this year.
“It’s an honour to be part of a team
that can say that,” Huether said. “It’s
a real accomplishment for us.”
Huether has been in the Lakers
program for nearly a decade,
playing in Brussels and Seaforth
before that.
A fan of Jonathan Toews and the
Chicago Blackhawks, Huether said
that he was excited to be chosen to
try out for any team, and will be
happy to play in Saginaw.
If Huether makes the final cut, he
will live and go to school in
Saginaw, while being on the road to
locations all over Ontario and parts
of the northeastern United States
Huether was part of the OHL
Combine, where he was scouted.
The combine featured 60 of the
AAA league top players and 30 top
goalies. A combine, in a hockey
context, is several tests for both on
and off-ice performance to help
clubs prepare for draft choices.
As part of the Lakers, Huether
practised twice a week, and trained
on his own four or five times a week
for approximately two hours each
time, and chores at home, and his
advice to other aspiring players
stems from this.
“It’s a lot of hard work,” he said.
“That and dedication, it takes a lot
of dedication.”
Huether said he would not have
made it without all his coaches’
help, and the help of his parents.
The 16-year-old likes to
wakeboard and fish when not on the
ice, and has aspirations of being an
engineer.

The Howson Hurricanes met up
with Wingham Optimists on May 27
in U14 Girls soccer action.
The Optimists kept Marion
Studhalter busy in the Blyth net and
took an early lead scoring twice by
midway through the first half. The
Hurricanes went on the offensive
and Charlene Schramm scored on a
long drive, Brianna Yuill picking up
an assist.
Blyth tied it up by the half with
some nice passing from Yuill and
Holly Howson to set up Mackenzie
Nesbitt for a goal.
The second half started with
Wingham taking the lead once
again.
Now with Schramm in net, the
Wingham team put some real
pressure on the Blyth goalie.
Schramm did well to keep the ball
out and even stop a Wingham
penalty shot.
The Hurricanes were able to tie
the game late in the half when
Melissa Van Schaik fed the ball to
Ariya Vellanga.
Vellanga wove her way through
four defenders before getting a shot
on net to tie the game, but Wingham
came right back on the next play to
go ahead once again.
With time running out the
Hurricanes pressed hard into the
Wingham end but were unable to
come with a goal. Wingham won by
a score of 4-3.

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club had picture-perfect weather
last week and many of the golfers
took advantage of it. It was sure
great to see the tee blocks full of
eager golfers most of Sunday and
Monday of the long weekend.
The Tuesday ladies enjoyed a
beautiful sunny day and most of the
girls just played in groups spread
out on different parts of the course
throughout the day. Janet Haines
was the winner of the longest putt
on the ninth hole.
The Wednesday morning senior
men had 23 golfers out early to try
and beat the heat. It was great to see
some new winners of the prizes
with Bill Johnston low net, followed
by second place Wayne Gordon and
Byron Adams, third. Carson
Noseworthy shot the low gross
round with a 38. Ed Daer was
second with 40 while Larry Cerson
and Doug Vanderwoude were tied
for third with 41. Harry George was
the winner of the longest putt.
The Thursday night men again
had a super night to play golf with
37 golfers taking part. The winners
were: closest to the pin, Dan
McPherson and Bruce Boyd;
longest putt, Jim Ross and Mark
Foxton and hidden scores, Mike
Logan and Joe O’Rourke. Foxton
was also low gross for the night
with a 40.
On Friday afternoon, 19 young
ladies came out to the club to share
in a birthday party for Donna Shaw.
The girls had a great day and shared
some stories and some laughs in the
dining lounge looking out onto the
golf course.
The Friday night scramble was
cancelled due to too many people
away or having other commitments.
The night still turned out to be very
busy with several golfers and close
to 30 enjoying supper. This Friday,
June 4, the club is having its
monthly golf and wing night.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
It is sure great to see the
clubhouse busy and many new and
old faces taking advantage of our
scenic view on the patio.

Wild man
Jason Salverda might have made it look easy, but May 25’s
track and field meet at Hullett Central Public School was
serious business, especially when it came to the long jump.
