A penny spent
Kristin Oster was among those cruising for some new stuff
last week at the Blyth Legion Ladies Auxiliary’s annual
penny sale, which ran for several days, finishing up on
Saturday with a barbecue. (Aislinn Bremner photo)
Approximately 50 Edgar relatives
(four generations) gathered at the
home farm of Don Edgar for their
annual May 24 celebration.
Special guests were Irlma Edgar
of Wingham, Mait and Mary Edgar
of Petrolia. Helen Stonehouse of
Braemar Retirement Home wasunable to attend this year. Everyoneenjoyed fireworks on Sunday night. This year it was one of the best yearsfor weather in the last few years. Some came to camp on the lawnwhile others returned on Mondayfor golf at the Wingham Golf Club, fishing in the river and back at Niel
Edgar’s pond. Lane Edgar caught the
biggest fish of the day and had his
picture taken with it.
While some were fishing, others
went for a walk in the bush. Some of
the flowers were still out. This is a
long-time event in the Edgar family.
Through the years, it has changed.
We use to plant potatoes in the
morning and go fishing in the
afternoon. The kids’ job was to pickup worms while the adults plantedthe potatoes. Now it has become afun weekend which everyone looksforward to every year.Everyone enjoyed hamburgers andhot dogs and many different saladsand desserts. After lunch some of thekids went back to the river to see if
they could catch some fish.
Everyone had a good time and I’ll
bet there were some sunburns on
Monday morning.
Happy birthday to Marg

BLYTH UNITED CHURCH
Greeting at Blyth United Church
on Sunday, May 30 was Joan Clark.
Ushering were Elaine Chamney,
Terry Richmond and Harvey
Bernard. Floyd Herman was music
director and Deb Hakkers ran the
power point. Jan Logtenberg was
guest speaker. Jan welcomed
everyone to church and drew
attention to the announcements
printed in the bulletin. She drew
special attention to the
announcement that there would be
no church service in Blyth next
Sunday. Everyone is invited to join
the Sunday School at Camp
Menesetung for their awards Sunday
and to join the Sunday School for a
potluck lunch after the service.
Floyd Herman played the Introit,
Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God
Almighty.
The call to worship was repeated
responsively followed by the singing
of the first hymn, “In the Bulb There
is a Flower”. The children came to
the front for their story time.
Jan asked them their names. She
also asked them if they had gotten
their names from their father or
mother. She explained to them that
sometimes our names mean
something. Sometimes our names
come from the Bible, like David or
Mary. She told them that God
becomes part of their name. They
joined hands and repeated The
Lord’s Prayer along with the
congregation.
Ally Glousher carried the Christ
candle downstairs for their time of
worship and fellowship. The
congregation sang the third verse ofthe hymn, “In the Bulb there is aFlower”. The scripture was fromPsalm 8,A Song of David. The choir anthem was one of theold hymns, “Holy God, We PraiseYour Name”. Fred Meier sang a soloof the middle verse in German as ithad been written. Jan’s message to
the adults was “God by any other
Name”.
Christians have a job to make sure
that we take care of God’s wondrous
world. Our name sometimes means
something. Our good name is
important to us. We must be careful
the way we use God’s name. We
must use His name with respect.
God’s name is in us and ours in Him.
We dishonour God’s name when we
use it with dishonesty. We are to use
God’s name honourably and to keep
God’s name Holy.
The next hymn, “Creator, Spirit,
Living Word” was followed by the
offering being received, the prayers
of the world and the singing of the
Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn,
“Bring Many Names” was followed
by the commissioning and
benediction and the singing of the
Three Fold Amen.
Everyone was invited for coffee
and a visit with Jan.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain
(Arthur Pink, “The Ten Commandments”)
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain: for the Lord will
not hold him guiltless, who takes His name in vain.” Exodus 20:7
This commandment bids us to speak of God with that frame of spirit which is
agreeable to His dignity and solemnity and the majesty: that is, with the utmost
sincerity, humility and reverence. O what high thoughts ought we to entertain of
such a Being! In what holy awe should we stand of Him!
Anything pertaining to God should be spoken of with the greatest sobriety.
God’s Name is taken in vain — when we use it without due consideration and
reverence. Whenever we make mention of Him before whom the seraphim veil
their faces — we ought seriously and solemnly to ponder His infinite majesty and
glory — and bow our hearts in deepest prostration before that Name.
God’s Name is not to be sported with and tossed to and fro upon every light
tongue. O my reader, form the habit of solemnly considering whose Name it is you
are about to utter. It is the Name of Him who is present with you, who is hearing
you pronounce it. He is jealous of His honour, and He will dreadfully avenge
Himself upon those who have slighted Him!
It has become almost impossible to walk the streets or to enter mixed company
without hearing the sacred Name of God treated with blasphemous contempt. The
novels of the day, the stage, and even radio (and more lately television, the cinema,
and the press) are terrible offenders, and without doubt this is one of the fearful
sins against Himself, for which God is now pouring out His judgments upon us.
God is dreadfully incensed by this sin, and in the common commission of this
Heaven-insulting crime, our country has incurred terrible guilt! “The Lord will not
hold him guiltless that takes His Name in vain.” Sore punishment shall be his
portion, if not in this life, then most assuredly so, eternally so, in the life to come!
