Obituaries
By Reba Jefferson
On Monday, Feb. 15 Wawnosh 4-
H held meetings two and three at the
Jeffersons’.
While members were arriving
junior leader, Reba Jefferson, led the
club in a game of cards. Then
president, Sophie Jefferson, opened
with the pledge and led roll call,
which asked members what they did
for good luck. Many members
reported that they crossed their
fingers, said a prayer and more.
The home assignment asked
members to bring in their favourite
green item and survey five people
for good luck, members shared their
results.
Members went upstairs to make
their Easter candles. They used a
clear wax and some pieces of crayon
to get the colour. While the wax was
melting, the club divided into
cooking groups.
One group decorated a bunny
cake, another made egg nests,
another baked Irish soda bread and
the last group made potato and
cheddar cheese soup.
After the desserts were made and
the bread and soup were cooking,
the members heard some of the
senior member projects. Tina
Drennan presented her research
about another celebration,
Groundhog’s Day.
Reba shared her St. Pat’s popcorn
and told the club how she made it.
Jolande Oudshoorn showed the
club her gel candles she had made
and told the club how to make it.
Next the club learned about St.
Patrick’s Day. Groups made
presentations about symbols of St.
Patrick’s Day or the life of St.
Patrick, who was from Britian,
kidnapped into slavery but escaped
to Ireland where he preached to
pagans about Christianity.
Reba then led a rhythm game of
President to take a break from the
meeting. After this, the club made
St. Patrick’s Day crafts. Half the
club started with a shamrock pin
made of felt and a button, led by
Eileen George. The other half made
a shamrock magnet made of folded
paper, led by Marita Oudshoorn.
The groups then switched and made
the other craft.
Members were divided up into
their presentation groups to teach the
club about an aspect of Easter.
Groups learned about the origin of
the Easter egg, Easter bunny, Easter
traditions and Easter in Canada.
One thing they learned was that the
rabbit is a symbol of fertility as it is
the most fertile animal.
Sophie closed the meeting by
asking members to sing along to
Peter Cottontail.
