The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
AA Midgets are on a roll this week
winning their first round best-of-
three LLFHL series against the
Sarnia Sting and their first game in
the best-of-five provincial series
against the Stratford Aces.
In Sarnia on Saturday, Lightning
goalie Emily Kelly recorded a 1-0
shutout to end the series in two
games with Sara Gossell scoring the
lone goal.
Friday night the Lightning had a
3-1 win against the Sting with Ona
Mezenberg scoring a pair and
Gossell netting the game winner.
Goalie Sarah McGall had a great
game in net.
Late Tuesday night Feb. 9 the
Lightning beat the Stratford Aces 5-
2 in their first game of the provincial
series.
Mezenberg had two goals and
singles went to Gossell, Marcie
Landman and Diane Bushell.
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
is headed to Stratford Friday night
for game two.

The Bullets one goal was enough
to take the victory.
The Bullets next game was against
the Mildmay Katz. In the first half
the Katz scored one to take the lead.
The Bullets worked hard to get it
back but then they ran into some
penalties. At full strength they kept
the Katz penned up in their own end
but Blyth was unable to score.
Mildmay won the game and
eliminated Blyth from the
tournament.
Off to OFSSA

Madill’s ski teamoff to OFSAA raceOn Wednesday, Feb. 10, theMadill Nordic Ski team travelled toWindy Hill Farms near Embro torace in the (Western Ontario
division) WOSSAA competition.
Despite frigid temperatures, and
very icy trails, the team came away
with some very outstanding results.
The racers competed against nine
other high schools, involving over
130 skiers.
Jamie Pollard had an excellent
race, capturing first place in the
novice boys category.
Kelsey Morgan and Michele
Studhalter finished fifth and sixth in
a tough junior girls race, both
qualifying for OFSAA. Rachael
Nivins placed 16th and Kara
Hendriks 22nd.
In the junior boys race Lucas
Klages finished 25th and Jason
Meier was close behind in 28th.
The Yungbluts swept the podium
in the senior girls’ individual race,
with Erin Yungblut taking first,
Emily Yungblut second, and
Madeline Yungblut, capturing third
place. Julie-Anne Staehli also had anexcellent race, finishing very strongin sixth place. The girls blew away the
competition in the relay race,
earning a gold medal and winning
the overall senior girl title.
The senior boys had some fierce
competition, but also did very well,
with Ron Groen dominating the
race, winning gold, Matt
Underwood finishing in 10th place
and Matt Nivins following close
behind in 11th. The senior boys were
also successful in the relay race,
winning a bronze medal.
Nordic skiing also awards the
overall combined boy and girl team
in both senior and junior categories.
Madill skiers Madeline Yungblut
and Ben Underwood, both junior
skiers, skied “up” in senior for
WOSSA to help complete the senior
team.
As a result, the senior team won
this combined title carrying the
whole senior team to OFSAA, in
Midland, Feb. 24-26.

This past week was a busy one at
the Wingham Golf and Curling Club.
Monday, Feb. 8 the daytime curlers
got the week rolling with skips
Wendell Stamper, Ron McMichael,
Mac Inglis, Les Shaw, Gord
Heatherington and Bill Tolton picking
up wins.
Monday night men’s league saw
Barry Simpson, and Kyle Forster
come out on top.
The Tuesday ladies’league winning
skips were Jill Eadie and Sandra
Morrison while Tuesday competitive
league winners were Aart Devos, Don
Edgar, Russ Taylor and Kyle Forster.
Tuesday and Wednesday also saw
the high school Huron County curling
championship take place at the club.
The host team, F.E. Madill, curled
well with Preston Eadie’s boys’ team
winning the A championship and
Kabrina Bishop’s girls’ team coming
out as the B side winner.
Goderich high school won the girls’
A side and Seaforth took the B side
for the boys.
All four teams will represent Huron
County in the Huron/Perth curling
championship being held Wednesday,
Feb. 24 at the Wingham Curling Club.
The Wednesday night mixed league
finished out the day with Karen
Burke, John Dailleboust, and Earl
Fitch skipping their teams to wins.
Thursday daytime curlers saw
Irving Elliott, Wendell Stamper, Ron
McMichael, Mac Inglis, Tom Tolton
and Gord Heatherington pick up
wins. Thursday night’s action teams
picking up wins were Bill McDonald,
Phil Eadie, Kelsie Eadie and Matt
Cottrill.
The Belgrave mixed league
winning skips were Ian Johnston, Bob
Sinclair, Cam Cook and Mike
Metske.
Friday mixed league winning teams
were Barry Simpson, Lynn Hickey
and Brian Potter.
The Sweetheart bonspiel finished
up the week with some great curling
action. Twelve teams took part in this
annual event with the team of skip
Ross Peacock, Verna Taylor, Bob
Foxton and Joyce Vincent winning
the first draw and skip Cathy Skinn,
Jay Marston, Debbie Green and Dave
Tiffin team winning the second draw.
Ross edged out Cathy to win the
CKNX champions trophy.
Bruce Pewtress again had the ice in
great curling shape and Elizabeth,
with help from Jayne, did a terrific
job in the kitchen.

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club is holding its year-end general
members’ meeting on Tuesday, Feb.
23 at 7 p.m. at the club.
