Skips and Stones
– By Bruce Skinn
Was it the hours of long, hard
training or the new rubics cube
jerseys? One of them propelled the
F.E. Madill Nordic team to the
podium at the Huron Perth
Championships in Duntroon on
Thursday, Feb. 4.
In the junior boys race Ben
Underwood placed 13th, Belgrave’s
Jason Meier finished his race with a
21st-place finish while teammate
Jamie Pollard of Wingham finished
25th.
“All junior boys are doing
exceptionally well considering this
is their first year on skis,” said
Coach Julie Sawchuck.
It was a large field of competitors
in the junior girls event with 24
racers. Blyth’s Michele Studhalter
had a great race bringing home
bronze, while Kelsey Morgan
finished fifth. Teammate Kara
Hendriks also had a personal best
race finishing 13th.
The fantastic four consisting of
Erin, Emily and Madeline Yungblut
along with Julie-Ann Staeli, owned
the podium with first, second, third
and fourth-place finishes.
If that had not been enough they
won the senior girls relay, lapping
almost all of the competition.
This also earned them senior girls
overall champions title.
The senior boys finished off the
day with Ron Groen bringing home
gold with a 21.25 min finish for the
8-km race.
Matt Underwood followed closely
with a fifth-place finish while
Belgrave’s Trevor Raynard finished
25th.
