southern Ontario over the last two
decades, Allen has spent the
majority of that time in rural Ontario
and the last several years in Huron
County, spending time in Exeter
before coming to Londesborough.
While Allen is eager to get
working at Hullett Central, starting
just on Monday, he says he has a lot
of work to do before he can impose
any changes on the school. He says
the school has been run well for
years and he has no intention of
changing that.
“Right now, I’m just getting to
know the students, the staff and the
community. I need to know the
routines before I start making any
changes,” he said. “It would be
foolish to come into this school and
start to do things here that worked in
Exeter. Each school is different and
the results could be disastrous.”
Allen, who has five children and
now lives in Seaforth, grew up in
Brampton and Wallaceburg and says
he was always drawn to the world of
education, even when he was young.
“Initially I wanted to be a high
school physical education teacher,”
he said. “I enjoyed the classes and I
enjoyed teaching the students. I also
enjoyed the other aspects of the
course, math, science and
kinesiology.”
So while Allen was achieving his
Bachelor of Education at Brock
University, he was also obtaining his
undergraduate degree in physical
education.
In addition to his background in
physical education, which has been
coming to the forefront in many
education boards recently, Allenthinks his educational backgroundhas always been an asset to him,even from his very early years in theworld of teaching.“I think people think most
teachers are always very good
students, but I had my struggles
growing up,” he said. “I was an
average student and I had some
struggles both in my behaviour and
my academics and I think that has
helped me to understand children
who need extra help and children
who have emotional issues.”
In his personal life, Allen says he
spends the majority of his free time
with his children, which is his
choice.
His children range from two years
old up to his 21-year-old son who is
currently studying kinesiology at
university.
When asked about his children,
Allen says that while they are all
academic and like to read, his
daughters like music, while his sons
tend to have similar interests as him.
However, as part of being a good
father, Allen says he does his best to
understand and “tap in” to his
children’s interests.
Allen’s teaching career began in
London, teaching at a Christian
school in 1991. He said it was a great
experience, but he eventually
returned to Brock University for
some additional education before
teaching at another Christian school
in Stratford.
After his stint in Stratford,
teaching Grade 7 and 8 students, he
taught at Elma Township Public
School for four years and was the
vice principal for one year.
After his time in Elma, he went to
Exeter for nearly four years as a vice
principal before coming to
Londesborough.
