The Citizen, 2010-01-07, Page 9It would have been a dream for
Brooklyn and Brianne Wheeler as
young female hockey players, to
walk up Sports Drive to the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre
to attend an all-girls hockey clinic.
When they were growing up, girls
hockey was not what it is today.
This is why they were so
overwhelmed when 60 girls,
residing from as far away as Exeter
and Mount Forest, registered for
their clinic on Dec. 23.
The day-long clinic was sponsored
by the Brussels Minor Hockey
Association and was called Hockey
Drills and Life Skills: empowering
young women to lead and succeed
on and off the ice. The day was
packed full of off-ice workouts, team
building, two hours of on-ice drills,
talks on nutrition for female athletesand fun.The cost of admission for theclinic was $15 and an unwrappedChristmas gift. These 60 gifts were
to be donated to the Christmas
Bureau, driving home the “life skill”
of the day, which was focused on
leadership and community service.
Brianne was the facilitator of this
portion of the day, as she gave a
presentation on her recent adventure
to Kenya, where she worked in an
orphanage over the summer.
A number of qualified instructors
donated their time and efforts for
the day. Kim McCullough and
Kristy MacDonald, friends of the
Wheelers, travelled from the Toronto
area to help out. McCullough is the
director of Total Female hockey in
Toronto, and is a former member of
the Dartmouth College women’shockey team. MacDonald is now afinancial planner in Cobourg andspent her college days as asteammate of Brook’s at Colgate
University in upstate New York.
Carmen Carnochan, of Seaforth,
played AA hockey growing up and is
currently pursuing a diploma in
exercise and fitness. She added an
invaluable component to the day
with her off-ice workouts and
nutrition talks.
Brianne is currently playing
hockey at the Kimball Union
Academy in New Hampshire and
has recently accepted an offer to
play at Colby College next year in
Maine. Brook played for the Colgate
Raiders during her college years,
and is now an assistant coach at the
Culver Academies in Indiana.
