STRAUPHAN CE‘gfiRATgS Over 30 neighbors and friends henored Mrs, Charles Straughan last week on the occasion of her 89th birthday by calling during the afternookat her home. _ The guests were welcomed by Mrs. Wes Bradnock and the guest book was in charge of Mrs. Robert Turner and Mrs. Oliver Anderson, Miss Margaret Jackson poured tea during the afternoon and tea and birthday cake were served by Mrs. Norman McDowell, Mrs. _Sidney Lansing, Mrs, Kenneth McDougall and Mrs. Oliver Anderson. • Mrs. Straughan received many cards of congratulations, telephone calls and a yellow carnation corsage which she wore during the afternoon. Mrs. Wilfred Sanderson, Mrs, Donald Haines, Mrs. Alvin Leatherland and Mrs. Wes Bradnock attended the annual meeting of the Huron Presbyterial held at Seaforth last Wednesday, Mrs. Harry Arthur and Miss Laura Phillips visited at Owen Sound last Wednesday with Miss Judy Arthur, student nurse at the Owen Sound Sehool of Nursing. The sympathy of this community is extended to Mrs. Robert Turner on the death of her mother, Mrs. W. McWhinney of Goderich. ' Ted Mills was returned as chairman of the Community Memorial Hall Board when the annual meeting was held last week in the hall. Mrs. Gordon Taylor was again elected secretary-treasurer and William J. Craig the caretaker for the coming year. The chairman presided for the meeting with members of the board, Reeve Hugh Flynn and Leonard Archarnbault representing Hullett Township; Gerald .„ McDowell, East Wawanosh; James McPhee, Colborne Township; Ted Mills, West yawanosk and Its, Frank RaithW •,S• ;president Women's Institute, present. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as read by Mrs. 0, Taylor. She presented the annual financial statement which was accepted. Mr. yyiliiam J. Craig reported the, trail rented 00 times with 14 meetings held free of charge making a total of 64 times the ball was used. Mrs. Taylor reported that the Women's Institute had given donations of $472,75 during the Year, Other proceeds reported Colborne concert, $82.83; rummage sale, $238.30; water rentals, $309.8Q and Valentine • dance, $115.58. Financial statements are available from the treasurer on request. Plans were made to hold a dance in the near future and Mr. Leonard Archambault was named chairman to inquire when it could be held. , MRS. JOHN POLLOCK RE-ELECTED Mrs. John Pollock of Goderich was re-elected president of the Huron Presbyterial of the Women's Missionary Society of the Presbyterian Church in Canada when delegates from eight auxiliaries met in First Church, Seaforth, recently Co review the work and accept the reports. Mrs. Pollock presided for the meeting which was opened with the poem — "Help Me" and the hymn, "0 God Our Help In Ages Past," with Mrs. A. McGregor as pianist. The president read -Psalm 121 and based her New Year's message on this psalm. The minutes were approved as read by the secretary, Mrs. R. Dyke of Goderich. The financial statement was received as given by the treasurer, Mrs. • A. McConnell of Goderich. She reported an increase in givings during the past year. Reports of the various secretaries were received. Mrs. Dale Nixon of Seaforth, secretary for adult afternoon and evening groups, reported on the work done throughout the Presbyterial. Mrs. Gordon Schwalm of Hensel' reported for the C.O.C. and Explorer groups and Mrs. W. Bradnock reported for 'the C.G.I.T. and young women's groups. Mrs. Charles Kalbfleisch, Varna, reported for friendship .and service, and Mrs. flarVeYHydeOf Hensall reported the work done among the home helpers. The literature secretary, Mrs, Wilfred Sanderson, Auburn, told of her work and Visits to the Societies during the year- A report Prepared by the glad tidings secretary, Mrs. John Thompson of Seaforth, who was unable to be present, was given and Mrs. Walter Siloam(' of Blyth reported on life memberships and certificates given and there was a notable increase in this department. A report of the supply secretary, Mrs. E. Farquar of Clinton was given and a plea to help support the Indian Reserve want in Northern Ontario was stressed. Mrs. Joe Dunbar reported for the Press of Belgrave, Mrs. ft, V. MacLean ' of Clinton, presided for the election of officers and the installation service. Mrs, Donald Haines of Auburn was named delegate to the Synodical meeting in Paris on April 21 and 22 with Mrs. J. R. Leitch of Goderich as alternate. Plans were made to hold the spring meeting in Seaforth on May 13. An invitation was extended by Mrs. H. Rivers to attend a special meeting 'on January 29 in Goderich to hear Johnston, past moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Canada.
