Mohawks starred as a team to post the impressive win, their first of the season. Almost every player shared the spotlight as the tribe hit the jackpot. Colle Bowman, Harry McEwen and Pete Ellis collected four points with two goals and two assists each. Red Bonder copped three with a brace of counters and one assist. John Trendell fired a couple of markers; Pete Restelli and Clayt Needham post ed a goal and an assist each and “Boom-Boom” Gravett and Doug Beatty both counted two assists. For the kid line, it was the end of a scoring drought. They hadn’t been able to flash the light in three games but the jinx broke Tuesday. Led by Centre Trendell, who put on a stellar stick-hand- ling display, the kids fought for three well-deserved markers. The tribe’s production pair, McEwen and Loader, began hit ting their stride, too. Playing with Bowman for this .game, they exe cuted some beautiful plays. Top combination of the night Forest Tops Loop With Three Wins Forest Lakesides' three wins put them in an early season lead in the W.O.A.A. interlocking. League. The Lakesides defeated Milverton 8-2 this week but suf fered their first loss to New Ham burg 8-6 in overtime Thursday night. Strathroy Rockets won one and lost one during the week to make second spot. Walkerton Capitals, the only undefeated team in the loop, are in third place with two victories. Exeter Mohawks are in fourth spot with a win and a loss, Goderich Sailors won their first game Thursday night by defeat ing Starthroy Rockets 5-1. The games which Walkerton, New Hamburg, Mitchell and Mil verton play with O.H.A. teams do not count in the standing. STANDING i was a Bowman-Beatty duet in the second period. Passing from rink side to rinkside as they pulled the ‘Burg’s defence out of posi tion, the two pulled a Bowman-to- Beatty-to-Bowman play that click ed with precision. About a minute later, Beatty drew a face-off in the New Hamburg zone, nudged it back to Bowman whose slap shot whistled into the top corner of the net. New Hamburg’s Bob Arnold opened the scoring in the first period but two goals by Loader and Trendell in less than 20 sec onds put Mohawks into the lead. Ron Honderick tied it up but Needham sunk liis own rebound to give Mohawks a 3-2 edge. In the last two periods it was a route. Gar Baker played another steady game in the tribe’s nets. Barry Doak suffered a cut over his eye during the game but re returned to j)lay after treatment. Mohawks used Bill Hayward, a new RCAF player, on defence for the first time. Capitals Cop Thriller 4-3 Exeter fans’ favorite puck chaser, 1_ , .*_____’ himself in the conflicting dual role of star and goat of Friday night’s heart-stopping exciter which Walkerton Capitals copped 4-3) Unquestionably the most spec tacular player to wear a Mohawk uniform, Flashing Frankie fired the scoring punch of the tribe with two goals and a vital as- Frank Anderson, found sist. His sojourns in the sin bin, however, cost his team those same three markers. The feats of Anderson were only one of the many outstand ing features of this second spirit- stirring dish of entertainment whipped up by Mohawks and their opposition in as many home games. Tension was terrific throughout the last 20 minutes of the game as the teams see-sawed back and forth across the ice in jet-like fashion. A goaltender’s duel, flaming tempers and stellar defensive play were other high lights. Slow to get into action, Mo hawks spotted Walkerton a 1-0 lead in the first period but held the visitors to a blank in the middle frame, It was early in the third that Walkerton broke loose on Anderson’s second penalty of the game, Frankie went off for slashing at 30 seconds of the period and before he was skating again, big Keith Ringham had rapped in two quickies to give his team a comfortable 3-0 lead. Anderson began hitting the jackpot in the middle of the frame. Switched to the front line eariler in the game, Frankie team ed up with Red Loader for the first tally at 10.56. They fought to clear the puck out of their own end and Anderson hit the corner with a rocket shot. Exactly three minutes later, Frankie broke away with only one man back, drew him to the side and set Loader up at the blue- line. Walkerton goaltender, Les Binkley, was no match for shifty Red. Harry McEwen fed Frankie his breakaway pass for the tying goal at 17.16 of the period. When his shot hit the twine, it set off a deafening roar of approval from’ Mohawk boosters. A minute and one-half later, Frank and Willie Hass tangled in a behind-the-net fight that sent both of them to the cooler with majors. Frank re* ceived an extra two minutes for slashing. Ironically, it was Haas who scored the winning counter while Anderson was still in the box. His shot caromed through a maze of legs to. win the game. Besides Frank, Red Loadei’ and Colle Bowman were Mohawks' best on the night. Bowman left the ice only twice during the con test and broke up countless plays. The netminding of the tribe’s Gar Baker and Binkley (who were rivals for Kitchener - Waterloo Dutchman job) was a sight to be hold. They turned away enough rubber for a double set of tires. Leading a 16-trip penalty pa rade was naughty Earl Mortimer, who served five sentences. An derson received three minors and a major and Haas took a minor and major. Pete Restelli, hit by a puck in the third period, received seven stitches to close a gash in his head. Despite the hard work of the tribe’s kidline, it wasn’t able to register its first goal. Capitals are the biggest team the tribe has met yet. Its first line of six-footers, Ringham, Haas and Crawford, towered over Mo hawks. Defensive star of the Caps was George Zuk, the famous softballer. Minor Hockey House League hockey is now underway with 10 teams operat ing in the league. Two teams, Blue Devils and Red Devils, make up the Wee Wee group and two Squee Gee teams, the Seals and Penquins, take care of the Mighty Mites. The largest group by far is the Pee Wees who are broken into four teams—Ganadiens, Wings, Leafs and Rangers. Bantams have two teams, Flyers and Tee Pees. Standings after the first sion under Coach Red Loader have the Canadiens and Leafs leading the Pee Wee group with two points each, followed by the Rangers and Red Wings with no wins to their credit. The Bantams are very evenly matched. The Flyers are currently leading the group by virtue of their 2-1 win on Saturday a.m. A word of thanks to Mid Town Cleaners for once again helping out by dry cleaning all the singlets and sweaters and to Ernie Dempster of Centralia AF for his assistance to Loader with the Squee Gees.
