YOUR HOSPITAL’S ANNUAL
r
REPORT
FOR 1953
Message From The Chairman
The South Huron Hospital has completed one year of operation. During this period
staff, as well as the board, have experienced the usual problems which beset a new hos
pital. We believe that the growing pains associated with this venture are not serious and that
our difficulties are being solved us they arise.
You will note that we have not finished the year with a surplus. In fact, the first
years of a hospital's operation rarely do? However, included in our adverse trade balance, it
has been necessary to set up $2,000 as a reserve for bad debts of indigent patients, which in
effect means- that the above sum has been a free service to the community of South Huron
which would have otherwise been borne by th« taxpayers of this area.
I take this opportunity to thank all of those employed at the hospital, from Miss Clay
pole and Mr. Rivers down, for their fine efforts throughout the year. May I also thank the Wo
men’s Auxiliary for their great work without which a hospital can hardly function; and may
I also thank those local organizations who have continued to support our hospital with gifts
of much-needed equipment and cash donations. Lastly, may I thank the board vyho have given
unsparingly of their time in trying to make our undertaking a great success.

This maxim of the Prince of Wales with its significant meaning —
“I serve” — could well be the motto of South Huron Hospital.
In 11 months in 1953, our hospital treated over 2,500 patients, most
of them living in a 25-mile radius of Exeter. The facilities of equipment,
staff, doctors etnd nurses were in constant use to meet the ever-growing
demand for hospitalization.
As guardian of this community’s health, the Hospital’s door is always
open, the lamp of mercy never dims — and through the ceaseless cycle of
day and night, sure skilled hands stand ready to bring men hope and health.
