Down "S to Earth By D. I. HpOPJJR THE TIMES-ADVOCATE, EXETER, ONTARIO, THURSDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 17, 1953 ■Y V? X 4 '■f Mi SENSATIONAL BARGAINS IN OUR FIRST On the 100-acre farm where the large feed tonnage per acre is the aim, no other forage crop can begin to compare "to corn silage. With, the advent of the forage harvester it has become mor© popular than ever. The old conventional way of corn binder, wagon blower went out with the horses. Perhaps it was the change over from horses to tractors that has brought the forage harvester to the fore. While many farmers hire this work done by custom operators, harvesters are beginning to be very common throughout the dis trict. They are not a cheap piece of machinery to buy. Machinery manufacturers are still improv ing the existing models (they certainly can) and if labour costs should not lower in accordance to farm produce prices, we can forsee more of these labour-sav ing machines on the not too dis tant horizon if they are priced RAILWAY TIME TABLE CHANGES Effective SUNDAY SEPT. 27th, 1953 Fu// information from agents right. There is no comparison costs of filling a silo between binder, blower and forage har vester. Custom harvester rates vary a little but with labour at $1 per hour plus board (when you can get it), twine at 260 a pound, gasoline up in price, food prices gone up for the eight or 10 men needed to give an efficient crew, the farmers are rather lucky if the custom operators do not in crease his rates. We do know this from personal experience, re pairs and other overhead are no less if anythinisr higher. After studying the costs of old and new way very carefully, the for age harvester method saves the cost of cutting the corn with" a binder. At what stage should one put in the corn for silage? That is questionable. It depends on the type of livestock to be fed. The dairyman whose requirements are a high protein feed for milk pro duction has reason to cut his corn more immature than the beef man who needs carbohy drates to make meat. Some old- timers talked of leaving .until the dough-stage, others like to see the corn well shelled off the cob. Professor ,J,ohn Steckley, of Ridgetown, claims cut for the protein, to heck with the carbo hydrates. His theory being that protein costs more a ton than carbohydrates. We agree with him 100% and also the longer the corn stays in the field the greater the frost and wet weather risk. According to monthly weather forecasts frosts are im minent the beginning of next week (September 21), so beware of heavy protein loss in silage. According to Ridgetown perimental Farm, Western tario’s leaders in corn research, more and more emphasis must be placed on the leafiness of corn silage without sacrificing too much cob. Their latest recom mendation is 641AA Wisconsin, or any other hybrid that is avail able with same parentage. Re search has proven there is little or no feed value in the corn stalk, often called corn stover. The only feed value is in the skin of the stalk, the balance being fibre, that is not too palatable' if allowed to become too mature. He simply shoots a line from a rifle over a sturdy limb, attaches it to the elevator cage and hauls himself up by working a hand winch fixed to the cage’s floor. His one-man elevator is almost certainly made of Canadian alu minum. For by putting untamed* “white water” to work creating electrical power, Canada has made itself the largest exporter of alu- minurii in the world. Aluminum Company of Canada, Ltd. (Alcan) Huron County Crop Report By G. W. MONTGOMERY Heavy rains Friday night and Saturday morning will greatly help cultivated crops and pas tures. The first fall wheat was seeded this week, indications now are that the acreage will be down somewhat from other years. The white bean harvest is in full swing in the County and yields of 16-20 bushels per acre are being reported with the price at around $4 per bushel.
