Auburn T;CW meets
123 maternity leaves have been
granted since the Act came into
force.
Male and female job labels
have been abolished by the Act
and all jobs are open to qualified
workers regardless of sex.
The Women's Bureau reports
that the largest number of
complaints received involve job
classification and seniority lists
that bar women. While the effect
of the legislation in the white
collar area was not as immediate
as in industry, an increasing
number of complaints about
sex-typing of jobs are now
coming from workers in offices.
The Bureau noted that many
complaints about hiring,
‘vdismissal, training and,,
promotion are also received.

The WOmen's Equal
Employment Opportunity Act is
effectively eliminating
discrimination based on sex,
Labour Minister Gordon Carton
said recently.
In the first year of
enforcement of the Act, he said
283 complaints 48 of them by
men — have been registered with
the Ontario Women's Bureau. In
addition, the bureau has received
over 2,500 requests for
information on various phases of
the Act. •
Mr, Carton said recent
misleading statements on the
lack of protection for female
employees against discrimination
have caused considerable
concern to Many employees and,
to the department.
"I would assure all workers in
this province — male as well as
female — that the Women's
Equal Employment Opportunity
Act prohibits discrimination on
the basis of sex or marital
status," he said. "For • female
employees it provides the
additional protection of a
12-week maternity leave."
"Women are increasingly
becoming aware of their rights in..
employment and are realizing
that the law is on their side,"
Said Mr. Carton.
To date, it has been necessary
for the Minister of Labour to
appoint only one Board of
Inquiry. In the majority of the
cases amicable settlements have
been reached without resorting
to court action.
He estimated that during the
first year of the enforcement Of
the Act, thousands of women
workers have received the
benefit of maternity leave where
previously it hardly existed, in
one hospital, which used to
terminate pregnant employees,
