Clinton News-Record, 1971-12-16, Page 19These young visitors to the Ontario Science Centre are taking a
preview look at some of the strange cacti in the desert exhibit,
part of the Centre's new Spaceship Earth Gallery. Although
the cacti, live snakes and lizards that fill this exhibit were
brought to Toronto from all over the world, they can only
survive in desert conditions.

Like the astronaut en route
o the Moon who looks back and
ealizes the earth, too, is a
paceship, the earthbound visitor
o the Ontario Science Centre is
ffered a new pciint of globular
tew in an exhibit gallery
opening this month.,
The aim of the new exhibit
tructure is to illustrate —
ithout alarm, without ominous
arnings -- how life on earth is
overned by a system of
alances, how this always has
een the case and always will be.
It draws upon an analogy:
tronauts exist in spaceships
hich stimulate conditions on
arth, but which give them only
hose life support systems
ecessary for them to stay alive
nd function in space for a few
ays.
The earth as a spaceship has,
n the other hand, all the
ntegral.,parts needed to supply—•
ife indefinitely — or until the
alance of supplies is
ccidentally or foolishly upset.
This, precise balance of life is
he underlying theme of the new
xhibit gallery, and Spaceship
'arth is its name. The title is
ken from Buckminster Fuller,
ho has been talking and writing
bout Spaceship Earth for years.
Survival is a keynote of the
paceship Earth gallery. Part of
is a desert exhibit which
lustrates how certain forms of
fe can survive only in a
articular environment. Live
nakes and lizards living in a
ngle of strange cacti would
rish without the heat and
ryness of the desert.
Another area of exhibits
lerhonstrates how certain
pecies not only survive when
aken to a new environment —
hey can become ecological
lisasters. The introduction into
kustralia of a few pairs of
European rabbits seemed
larmless. But the rabbits found
to natural enemies in Australia.
Within a few years they had
multiplied to somewhere
between one and three billion. It
took a disease fatal only to
rabbits to bring them under
control and stop their
destruction of farm land.
What does a blade of grass
have in common with man?
Both are part of the Land Food
Web, a large exhibit showing
who eats what to survive. An
Ocean Food Web is also depicted
with tank after tank of live,
exotic sea life.
A highlight of Spaceship
Earth will be the water
re-cycling unit. This intricate
series of glass tubing gulps
polluted water and swishes it
through a series of strange filters
until it emerges as pure
drinkable water. Some of the
filtration processes simulated are
ones that occur in nature, while
others are processes developed
,by>man... •
BUckminster Fuller has
developed a special Spaceship
Earth map which eliminates
most of the distortion found on
regular maps. The Science
Centre received permission to
use the map and it can be seen in
the area of Spaceship Earth
dealing with populations and
their various densities, generic
foods and natural controls.
Visitor participation has
always been stressed in the
Science Centre. And, along with
exhibits to operate, Spaceship
Earth boasts a new feature —
push-agains. Want to learn
something about nitrogen? Push
the Button and a short
audio-visual show takes place.
Want to know more? Push again
and the presentation continues.
The Centre's scientists and
designers have been working on
Spaceship Earth for more than a
year and plan to open the area in
stages. Half the exhibits will be
in operation by mid-December,
with the remainder being
completed in the following few
weeks.

Ski pants, which may be
torn for a variety of winter
ports, require a warmth, type of
it and toughness of wear that
in't required for less strenuous
acreation or casual wear.
The fabric must have
msiderable weight and body
nce these slim pants will be
orn in cold weather without
alky clothing underneath. A
ttisfactory fabric will weigh 16
) 19 ounces per square yard,
' ye a two-ply stretch nylon
rp (lengthwise yarn) and be
sely woven. Warp stretch
nts have a "stirrup" or
der-instep strap. There is also
two-way stretch available in a
w of the active sportswear
nts.
In the most suitable type of
bric the filling yarns running
zoss the stretch warp are
sually non-stretch wool, or
iscose or a blend of the two.
he percentage of stretch yarn,
sually stretch nyloii, in the
tbric is a good guide to fabric
uality for both the amount of
retch and recovery as well as
earing 'qualities, Look for at
,ast 30% to 40% In ski pants.
Workmanship quality will
affect the life of your pants.
Look for seams that are wide
and carefully finished. Make sure
there is no ready seam slippage.
Look also for a reinforced
crotch plus a well-finished waist
band and zipper opening. Check
the stretch, especially along the
leg seams. Examine the ankle for
a smooth, flat fit without
turn-up on the foot and a
comfortable stirrup.
All stretch pants will bag at
the seat and knees after heavy
and prolonged wear but a good
quality garment should recover
its shape in about half an hour.
However, if the processing of the
stretch yarn has been poor or
workmanship inferior, the
garment may not recover its
shape. If the stretch fabric was
cut before it had fully relaxed,
the garment may shrink later in
dry cleaning. These,
unfortunately, are factors you
cannot check in the store.
If you are paying top price in
the hope of getting top quality,
you would be well advised to
buy f torn a reputable
manufacturer or retailer who
will stand behind the product.
