Labatts
paves
with glass
Broken glass, the foe of
modern road transportation, is
being used by Labatt Breweries
of Canada Limited to create
smooth pavement at the
company's London, Ontario
brewery.
Glasphalt, a new paving form
made by substituting crushed
glass for gravel, has been placed
in a 1,000 square foot section
used for marshalling Labatt's
fleet of golden tractor trailer
vehicles, The company is giving
the new substance a test trial to
see whether it is a valid
replacement for asphalt and a
new use of discarded glass,
Currently, Labatt's estimated
500 cubic yards of broken glass
per year at the London brewery
is carted away for such uses as
landfill,
The 7 5 cubic yards of broken
glass used in the Labatt
experiment represents about
300,000 of the familiar brown
beer bottles used by the brewing
industry in Canada, Ninety-five
percent of the bottles are reused.
In the glasphalt process the
glass is crushed into small but
jagged pieces (by Riverside
Construction Company Limited)
in the same manner as gravel. A
special wetting agent is added to
the common asphalt mix to bind
the glass and eliminate the edges.
The result: smooth pavement.
"If this experiment is
successful, we would be willing
to give our broken glass away to
the producer," said W. F. Read,
President of Labatt Breweries of
Canada Limited. "We realize
that the amount of broken glass
we could supply would not
facilitate full-time glasphalt
production in London, but other
glass-handling industries may
become interested and together
we could support a worthwhile
solution to the problem Of glass
disposal."
Labatt'S is the first brewery
in Canada to experiment with
glasphalt.
