A Bayfield band called "Savage" performed publicly for the first time in Bayfield last week. The
members of the band, all from Bayfield, are seen here, They are (left to right) John Walters, Dave
McConkey and Scott Layard. — photo by Liza Williams.
Advertising was no problem:
"The store owners were good
about it and nice!"
For two weeks the boys
practised and made posters, saw
the Council, and made their
various arrangements. They are
grateful to several individuals for
their eagerness and assistance,
and thank all who made their
dance possible.
"Mr. McFarland has been
great about helping us," say the
boys.
They hope that in the future
the ice will be broken and it will
be easier to get such an
activity together.
The end result was fun and
successful, and all are looking
forward to a "next time."

invited to hear this authority on
Asthma.
The meeting is being
sponsored by the Huron-Perth
Tuberculosis and Respiratory
Disease Association.
There are, many
misconceptions about Asthma
and the psychological aspects of
Asthma are also often poorly
understood. Practically all
allergists believe that
psychosomatic disturbances are
commonly the result of the
Asthma rather than the primary
cause.

Bayfield band make debut a success
Dairy farmer Jack Stafford, President of Huron County
Federation of Agriculture commenting on news release of increase of
the support price for industrial milk, attributed increase to action
started by Huron County Federation, when they initiated a meeting
in early March with Huron County Milk Committee, 0.M.M,B. and
interested dairy farmers in the county.
At that meeting they asked for a increase in industrial milk of 50
cents. This present increase is a start in the right direction, O.M.M.B.
sets the price for industrial milk and has not yet decided if this full
increase will be passed on to the farmers.
"Production has declined sharply in the past few months," said
Mr. Strafford," and this action by Canadian Dairy Commission
hopefully will eleviate the situation,"
BINDWEED CONTROL
Field bindweed may be controlled for beans, corn and grain in
1972 by a stubble spray program now.
The re-growing plants in a grain field NOT underseeded should be
sprayed with Banvel 3 or Kihnor at five acres per gallon of chemical,
This treatment will not eradicate the weed, but will reduce it
considerably. An eradication program would require two years in
grain with stubble spray each year.
The stubble should be left two weeks before plowing or disking
to maximize the chemical effect on the weed.

BY LIZA WILLIAMS
A band called "Savage" held
a dance Friday night in the
upstairs of the l3ayfield Arena.
The members of the. band,
John Walters, Dave McConkey,
and Scott Layard, have played
together for several years and
have developed into musicians
capable of a total and, to use a
complimentary expression from
the younger generation,
"together" sound,
"Savage" has been interested
in holding a dance or dances for
some time, but has been unable
until Friday to complete
arrangements. The members of
the band feel that one of the
main problems is a lack of
co-operation and interest shown
by some adults in the village.
"We're trying to provide an
activity for the kids of the
town," explains Dave. The band
feels that if they could establish
a reputation as a group they
would be able to attract many
young people who enjoy dancing
and meeting with their friends
and who have little or no
opportunity to do so.
The group first approached
the Town Council of Bayfield
with a request to use the old
Town Hall, as they had last year.
Council decided, however, that
the hall was impractical for such
an activity because of the lack of
sanitary facilities. Council
suggested the Community
Centre or Arena.
Roller skating downstairs in
the evening made the
Community Center impractical,
but the boys were unable to
have the skating cancelled for an
evening. It was eventually
arranged that skating would end
at 9:30, and the dance was held
from 8 to 12.
Another problem with the
Community Centre ,was the
charge of $25 which all groups
who rent it must pay for an
evening. The band has limited
resources, since it has other
expenses such as $6.00 a week
for a rented amplifier.
When they arrived at the
Community Centre. they found
that both the kitchen and the
PA system cost $10 extra. They
gave up the kitchen, because Mr.
Graham gave them soft drinks
from his General Store to sell at
a profit.
Admission was reasonable —
75 cents at the door — and the
crowd was fair, although it was
not equal to the expectations of
the boys. Most of the young
people were from Bayfield, and
knew the band personally. The
band had advertised as well in
Clinton, Goderich and Grand
Bend with Posters.
