No accident insurance next year
for students in Huron schools
BY SHIRLEY J. KELLER
When school opens next month, parents
will not be able to buy accident insurance
for their children through the school. This
fact • was made abtterlaritlk e,feat.. Monday
evening at the board of education meeting in
Clinton.
The accident insurance, which was
available in previous years, has been
discontinued because it wasn't considered
too valuable in case of student accident,
Some claims have been settled only after
considerable dispute concerning legal
interpretation of the policy and the board
agreed that since students are covered by
OHSTP,Ihrough their families, the insurance
could be dropped.
Some suggestion was made that dental
insurance would be useful, but it was learned
that this, too, was unsatisfactory at this
time.
Garden care
Knowing how and when to
trim hedges properly will give
them a well.balanced, attractive
appearance. There is a right way
to do it and that little extra care
will add the pleasing visual
effects needed for an effectively
landscaped home.
Two or three trimmings a
year are required. Late spring or
early summer, early August, and
late slimmer prunings are best.
At planting time, the hedges
should be pruned back severely
to encourage branching out at
the base. After that, trim them
so the top is narrower than the
bottom. The sun can reach all
branches allowing uniform
vigorous growth. Cut the sides
first then the top, recommend
horticulturists With the Ontario
Department of Agriculture and
Food.
It would be Wise to trim
during a period of dull weather
so the sun won't burn the
freshly cut tips. All hedges
require some pruning to shape
them regardless of their growth
habita, so take the time to do
the job properly.

from D.J. Cochrane, director of education,
that Education Week in Ontario should be
held in October rather than in March. The
board reasoned that inelerfierit weather in
March hampers full participation by the
parents.
The board hassled over whether or not to
approve an estimated expenditure of $1290
for a county principals' seminar to be held
during September, possibly in Grand Bend.
The Associate Superintendent in charge
of planning, W.D. Kenwell, said that
arrangethents called for two nights lodging
and meals for two days. Discussion centered
around the value of staying overnight rather
than returning home each evening and
reconvening the next morning.
Kenwell claimed the trek home each day
would "break up the continuity of the
seminar"'
"As much is to be gained by the informal
sessions as the formal sessions," said the
director.
"I don't know what the Good Roads
Convention costs the county each year,"
mused the chairman.
Final decision was for the seminar to be
held as planned with all expenses for the
staff paid by the board.
Mrs Marilyn Kunder suggested that
students should be included on the new
communications committees to be set up
this fall with board members and teaching
staff and now students working toward
better relations. The idea received full board
support.
The decision came after a department of
education edict urging more student
involvement in the education process.
Progress on the construction of the
addition to Seaforth Public School was
reported to the board. The masonry work is
approximately 75 percent completed and
mechanical work, plumbing, heating and
electrical work at the 45 percent mark.
Preparations are going ahead for the
pouring of the concrete and terrazzo floor
bases. The steel deck application has
commenced.
The board also learned that work at
South Huron District High Schaal is
progressing well with completion date likely
to be before school opens.
