Students in the Chatham area
are lapping up the sunshine and
being paid for it. They are
working on the seed production
fields of Pride Hybrid Company
of Canada, and their job is
detasseling corn.
Detasseling involves pulling
out the feathery, pollen-carrying
tassel which grows on top of the
corn plant. When breeding
hybrid seed corn, it is necessary
to use pollen from another
plant,
For the last 10 years or more,
Texas Male Sterility has enabled
seed companies to minimize the
job of detasseling. But the threat
of Southern Leaf Blight has
meant companies have had to
introduce detasseling in a big
way again.
Southern Leaf Blight caused
an eight percent loss in the U.S.
corn crop last year and is known
to be present in Western Ontario
at this time. So far, infection is
very slight, but growers still have
The honey outlook is
showing signs of improving for
Canadian producers, according
to J.R. Bums, an economist with
the Economics Branch, Canada
Department of Agriculture
The average price of honey
dropped from nearly 18 cents to
little more than 16 cents per
pound in the past two years.
However, there are signs
prices will improve. And world
prices have also been higher
lately. Dramatic increases in
Canadian honey production in
the last few years have produced
large honey surpluses,
About 51 million pounds of
honey was produced in 1970.
Since 1964, honey production
has ranged from a low of 33
million pounds to a high of 53
million pounds in 1969.
At the same time, Canadians
are eating less honey. The per
capita consumption of honey
has decreased from 2.3 pounds
in 1965 to 1,9 pounds in 1969.
Honey exports for the
1970-71 crop year could exceed
18 million pounds, a new record,
three times the yearly average
since 1964. This large increase in
exports will reduce the surplus
stock of honey to easily
manageable levels.
to face ,six weeks in which the
disease might develop. This year,
detasseling has been more
difficult due to the
exceptionally dry weather,
Plants have grown unevenly and
this has meant it has been
necessary to cover the same
ground several times,
Detaseeling is being carried
out by all seed corn companies I
and it is estimated that as many
as 3,000 students are being
employed in the Chatham area
alone compared to
approximately 500 in the
previous year,
Up to 650 teenagers have
arrived at Pride's headquarters
by special bus every day since
July 12 and will be working for
a month. The detasselers operate
in crews of 15 under a leader
who supervises the work,
Pride is breeding seed corn to
have a built-in resistance to
Southern Leaf Blight and
supplies will be available to
farmers in 1972. -
But because of a switch from
high value packaged honey to
bulk honey exports, the average
export price has declined for
Canadian honey.
Fortunately, when Canadian
production has been high, world
production has been such that
Canada has been able to store
and then export her surpluses.
Canada has some competitive
advantages in honey, Mr. Burns
says. Canada produces large
quantities of high grade white
honey which is in good demand.
Most world production is of the
darker honey,
Average yields in Canada are
among the highest in the world.
On the Prairies, where about
two-thirds of Canada's honey is
produced, average yields per
colony have ranged as high as
197 pounds.
But the Canadian honey
industry must be prepared to
cope with surpluses, Mr. Burns
warns,
"If Canada produces several
large honey crops at the mite
time as other world producers,
prices will fall and the net return
to Canadian honey producers
will be drastically reduced."
locations for growing container
vegetables. Various types of
containers can be used; buckets,
pots, and bushel baskets. The
larger containers are best for
tomatoes, onions, cucumbers,
eggplants, peppers, etc., while
the smaller ones are suitable for
chives, radishes, greens, and
herbs such as parsley, sage and
thyme.
A good potting mix consists
of 1/3 sand, 1/3 peat, and 1/3
soil, with ,one,oup, of 5-10-10
fertilizer per bushel of soil mix.
A one inch layer of coarse sand
or gravel in the bottom of the
container is advisable, as are
drainage openings. Three weeks
after plants have reached the
two-leaf stage and every three
weeks afterward, fertilizer can
be applied, At the rate of one
teaspoon per square foot of soil,
5.10-10 can be mixed in with
the top 1/2 inch of Soil and
thoroughly watered in. Nutrients
can also be applied biweekly
when you water. Dissolve lia
teaspoon of fertilizer such as
20-20-20 or 10-52-10 in one
gallon of water and then apply it
to the soil.
Watering is especially
important when growing
container vegetables. When the
soil becomes dry to a depth of 1/2
inch, it should be watered
thoroughly. Be careful.
Overwatering can kill the plants.
Do not wet the foliage of the
plant.
• Full sunlight is recommended
although some plants will
tolerate shade. Fruiting
vegetables such as peppers,
cucumbers and tomatoes require
the most sun. Leafy and root
vegetables such as beets, turnips,
cabbage, lettuce and radishes can
have more shade.
Insects will attack plants
anywhere, so watch for them,
For small infestations, hand
removal may be sufficient but
larger attacks may require
treatment with a recommended
pesticide.
Outlook brighter
for honey producers
