This fact is obvious when travelling a Trans-Canada route such as Highway 17 past Wawa where we have been staying for a few days with the Ontario Safety League's Canoe/Camping Demonstration Unit. I went over to a picnic site where the Michipicoten River flows under the highway a couple Of miles east of Wawa to attend the unveiling of an historic marker commemorating the importance of this river to the early fur trade, and I ran right into history in the making. Beside the picnic site was a drop-in centre for hitch-hiking outdoorstnen operated by the National Museums of Canada with the assistance of the Armed Forces who supply tenth and equipment and vehicles. But this drop-in camp has a new twist to it. Hitch-hikers do not pay for accommodation and meals with Canadian currency, they work for it, participating in a scientific research program on the ecology of the surrounding countryside. This pilot project, made possible by a Canada Man Power grant and under the supervision of Profecsor Ken Dawson, well-known educator and archaeologist, is helping to make the outdoors safer and more interesting for our young outdoorsmen of the highways. The Huron Trail Rider's Saddle Club held a successful local Gymkhana Saturday night. Sharpen sticks for roasting weiners and marshmallows away from your body. Your knife can slip and cause serious damage to your eyes. And remember, it's the weiner or the marshmallow you spear, not each other. Be careful. Camp is more fun without accidents. "Parents, you can help with safety around the swimming pool," says the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Tell your kids that when they flick wet towels at each other, it may seem like fun, but they can injure someone's eyes, perhaps an innocent bystander's. Not only should you be water wise around a pool, be eye wise, too. There are working mothers, of course, who believe that if the babysitter must file income tax returns because of the small pittance she earns, she will then increase her babysitting rates to a level which would make it uneconomical for mothers to work away from home. That seems just a little silly too. That's like a grocery store owner adding a comfortable margin onto his merchandise just because he has to pay income tax at the end of the year and forgetting that the more he earns, the more he must pay! For the working mother, a babysitter is a necessity. And a good babysitter is worth her weight in gold. I've had a number of fine babysitters working for me from time to time and I'm convinced that while some of them care for children because there is money to be earned, more of them take youngsters into their home because their own children are in school or away from home and they are lonely. And for my money, that's the best kind of babysitter to have. If a babysitter threatens to quit babysitting just because it will cost her a few dollars at the end of the year—just because she is going to have to contribute her rightful share to federal pot—then she is certainly not the kind of a babysitter I would engage for my children. As far as I'm concerned, a babysitter who is making a taxable income should pay taxes the same as anyone else ir that's what the government decrees—but let's not get all up-tight about it now. Even the income tax people aren't saying that's the way it will work. Stephen Haggitt left last week to enter Mohawk College at Hamilton to begin his studies. ADVANCE SALE OF PROGRAMS IN CLINTON Advance programs will be available Saturdays at the Cloud Room, Hotel Clinton and at Bill's Billiards and Bowling, Bartliff's Bakery and Restaurant and Smith's Office Su dies, At coffee break the other day at our office, the topic got arround to babysitting costs and the fact that federal government has indicated that babysitting expenses will be deductible next year at income tax time. That's quite a subject once you get into it. The big question seems to be whether or not it will be necessary to name the babysitter to whom you pay your money or will every working mother simply be able to claim X amount of dollars for babysitting charges. You see, most of the girls are worried that once the babysitter becomes known to the federal government, she will be required to pay income tax. In that case, some others feel, more and more babysitters will give up their little sideline and babysitters will become businesswomen who will have less and less real love for the children they care for. I I even went so far as to telephone the National Reycnue-Tantion y ,Department in a nearby city. I asked the somewhat brusque gentleman who answered the telephone just what would happen in that regard, and I was told quite abruptly that his office had had no information from Ottawa on the matter. "It still is not law," the man told me. Well, that's the way things work in Canada. The bait is thrown out to the common people and they are left to stew over it and imagine all sorts of horrible repercussions because of it, and then a year or so later the government issues a statement about the thing which takes all the sting out of it. It happens every time, a kind.of calculated effort to get people squirming and aware. Quite frankly, I cannot imagine a babysitter quitting her work just because she has to pay a little income tax at the end of the year. That's like supposing that people won't go to movies just because a luxury tax is included in the price of the ticket„.or conversely, it is akin to telling your employer you Wish to take less pay just because the government is now collecting a few cents a week less in income tax, I would also suspect that if a babysitter was expected to pay income tax on earnings, she Would be classified as the operator of a small business and she would be entitled to claim this, that and the other things as expenses which would eliminate most of the tax anyhow.
