Taped rifles and plenty of nerve
The two accused were from
Michigan, and for them the date
of November 26 meant that the
Moose season was closed. (Last
fall the moose season opened on
October. 3, in much of
Northwestern Ontario, and
closed on November 15 for
non-residents. It extended
another month, to December 15,
for residents). Our Michigan
`friends' subscribed to the
theory, that a moose hunter from
Michigan can be made to look
just like one from Ontario, and
they set about to prove it,
First, they conspired to
transform their Michigan
half-ton camper into an Ontario
version of the same thing, This
was easy, since the truck
manufacturers make them the
same in both placei. An that was
needed was a change of licence
plates. Somehow they obtained
a set of Ontario plates, and
bolted them on top of the
Michigan ones. This would get
them into the back country —
perhaps past the guards on
logging company roads — and
into the deep bush where the
moose live.
Next, they made certain they
brought along a popular,
Canadian made snowmobile. No
use attracting attention
unnecessarily.
The best proof of residency
though, one of them concluded,
would be to present 'a resident
moose licence. With that
document a fellow could really
bluff things out. Somewhere, he
was able to get one.
Normally, with all these
elaborate schemes and
innovations an ordinary poacher
would feel fairly secure; but not
these -chaps, Someone must have
told them that the north woods
is usually full of 'snow OR
November 27, They examined
their rifles and got one more
bright idea: "Week rifles can be
easily seen against a white
background. Let's camouflage
them!"
When the hunters were
surprised by a conservation
officer on '<aglow) Lake, deep in
the Wilds ,of Northwestern
Ontario, their rifles were
completely taped from putt
stock to muzzle with white
adhesive. Even the breach and
mechanism around the bolt were
spray-painted white. It's possible
they intended to chuck them
into the snow to avoid
detection. They never had the
chance.
It ended in Provincial Court
at Geraldton on March 16, 1971.
The charges: "Hunting moose
during a closed season, and using
a moose licence issued to
another person".
Perhaps they did find out
solution to both problems.

The Consumer Protection
Bureau offers the following tips
to help you avoid the pitfalls in
home driveway paving.
Be sure the price is realistic.
Get a minimum of three
estimates before you pick your
paver. Check to see if the
contractor is registered with the
Consumer Protection Bureau.
All home driveway pavers must
be registered, and bonded as
itinerant sellers.
Don't be misled by a lengthy
guarantee. Remember a
guarantee is only good for as
long as the company remains in
business. Most reputable
contractors will guarantee their
work for one year.
Be honest with the contractor
when he asks questions. Don't
tell him that no heavy trucks
park on your driveway when
you know the fuel tanker parks
there once a month. Do you
something after all, however,
There is a difference between a
non-resident and a resident
moose hunter. Resident hunters
don't tape their rifles with white
adhesive.

park your boat or trailer there
during the winter months? These
are factors which govern the cost
of a good job and if you are
dishonest with the contractor
then you must accept the
consequences.
Don't insist on a smooth
surface driveway, A coarser
texture of asphalt may not be as
aesthetically pleasing, but it is
more durable.
Accept no verbal agreements.
Insist that the contract list in
detail the depth of stone. base,
compacted thickness of asphalt,
date of completion and terms of
payment, length of warranty and
a list of specific situations when
the guarantee is not applicable.
