ar Folks:
I heard via the grapevine route that some people were inquiring
me, so I'm writing to let you know that I'm still in the land of
living, sleek and fat.
I dropped around one morning at "The Hut" to wish Carl a Merry
ristmas but when I heard different voices in the house I didn't
it. Carl saw my tracks across Bell's lawn and over the fence via the
st opposite the kitchen window to the back door, and then into
window well where I was waiting for him to open the back porch
or. But with other footsteps and voices inside, I took the shortest
ape route - via the laneway. Carl told Lucy no other cat but
ndi would have come that way.
I am no basso profundo so now Carl does not hear me when I call
him outside the door. My "me-ow" is gentle more like a mezzo
rano - Lucy doesn't need to think I'm imitating her, either,
hough Carl often accuses her of mumbling - what ever that is! So
it in patience on the doorstep for Carl to open the door.
He was so glad to see me and invited me into the kitchen. And he
d me he'd saved bacon rinds for me but had to throw them into
garbage pit the day before, and no doubt that hound at Le
au's had been over and picked them up. He gave me some scraps
lamb fat but I don't like it, and then he gave me some milk. I
ped a bit of it but I only came to see him and have a little play.
tried to,coax me into the bedroom to see Lucy, but while I used
stretch out at her feet that first year I was here, she never made
y fuss over me, so why should I bother with her?
Next morning Carl opened a tin of my favourite brand of cat
od. He taught me to eat it several years ago by putting a dab of it
some warm milk with a bit of dissolved butter. So I obliged him
eating a little and lapping some milk.
I was sitting contentedly on Carl's knee in the big rocking chair
ich I used to occupy, when Pearl came out of Lucy's bedroom
d patted my head. That was the last straw. I don't like women's
nds caressing me - besides I scented her dog. So I stayed under
e table knowing she wouldn't chase me down there.
Next day I heard chatter in Lucy's bedroom again, so after
eting Carl and eating his little offering of food, just to please him,
eft for haunts where the hunting is good. I much prefer to catch
d kill my own game. If those 'coons hadn't made it so unpleasant
r me, I'd probably still stay in the barn. I watched a black and
ite torn cat going in there one day! I never venture in unless Carl
with me. There are probably plenty of mice in there too!
Carl thought perhaps_1-,wasAfraicLof,,Snoopy,Ahe dog...next-door
t I'm not. Besides, he is tied up now to keep him from running
th other dogs in the village and getting into bad habits. Older ones
a gang soon lead the young into mischief.
Now that I know Carl is saving bacon rinds for me (which I relish)
11 perhaps call again at The Hut if my day-to-day living doesn't take
e too far away.
remain Yours truly,
Sandi, The Cat.
