With infinite care they hang up their stockings on Christmas Eve. -—Central Press Canadian Christmas Is Just Around the Comer ---------------—------------ ---------- --- How many seasons in a year . . . Four, you say? I think there are five—spring, summer, autumn, *winter . . . and Christmas! Isn’t that right? And don’t you think it’s wonderful to have Christmas come right in the middle of the longest and dreariest season of the year,-—a season within a season, as it were? Imagine winter without a Christmas—week after week of wintry weather with more, darkness than light, days of blizzards, followed by a white blanket of snow. But just as we get terribly fed up with the weather, along comes Christmas; -Christmas . . . with all its colour and story, its beautiful traditions and spirit of good will! Then, if we are wise, we forget all about the ele ments and set our hearts in tune for .singing. Away from home, who lets the weather worry them anyway? We say, “Ah, shucks, I’m going home, no matter what!’’ And, if we are among the stay-at-homes, we look forward to our folks coming for the Yuletide season. We work and, bake and scheme. We Trim the tree and wrap the presents and, although just about tired enough to drop, we greet every one with a cheery “H-appy Christmas!” And have you ever noticed, friends, that with every “Happy Christmas” that we say, so part of it comes back to ourselves? We just can’t come around wishing other folks happiness without sharing in it too. And another thought: Just as we welcome Christmas in the middle of winter, isn’t it also possible to exper ience an even greater sense of gladness when we remem ber that in this troubled world, with its threats of war, its strikes, disunity, and the hungry people, there is yet always Christmas, _Oh, we know little more than a things to eat will mothers telling the little children about the Christ child that was born long years ago—-born to bring peace to a troubled world. And, perhaps, as she tells it there will creep into many a mother’s heart a new hope—ia peace that passeth all understanding. Friends, don’t let bitterness spoil this Christmas sea son; don’t let ourselves think “Oh, what’s the use . . . All this unrest, all these high prices—where’s it all going to end?” Let us give ourselves a Christmas present of faith in the future, and let us be content with the little things of life—the friendly greeting, the little unexpected kind nesses that come our way, and the happy comfortable feel ing that comes to us with every spontaneous desire to help make Christmas a little easier, a little brighter for some one else. And where better could we start than with the children—not just our children but children everywhere. Christmas and children belong together. Happy the family happy, carefree laughter the grown J,oik! Let us Christinas) one for the be happy and in their our own. where young, excited voices and mingle with the deeper tones of make this Christmas (and every children to remember. Let them happiness we shall probably find And so, friends, in all sincerity, may I wish you a very happy -Christmas’ May you be light-hearted and gay, the better to enjoy your friends, your children and your- self—in short, YOUR Christmas! There will be ether days -—days when we can stew and fret and fuss, if we must, ■but this is the Christmas season! This is the time to say “Happy Christmas, everybody!” It is the one time of the year when we ppen our hearts and say the nice things that were meant to be said, and should be said, the year through! 1 lie s a t i s f a c t i o n of knowing that we have the privilege to serve such a host of loyal friends is surpassed only by the pleasure we take in wishing each and all of you a Merry Christ mas and a Happy New Year!
