Team lost 3.2 after 12 innings, then went on, to win the nightcap to tie the best of three series 1-1. Mustard retired 18 batters by strikeouts in the 12-inning opener. —Staff Photo. A fourth game was necessary to determine the WOAA Pee Wee championship after the third game was called a tie. The Clinton Ponies squeaked out a 9-8 victory which was in doubt right up to the last out in the seventh inning. Donnie MacDonald was relieved by Dave Bartliff in the third inning. Walkerton pulled ahead 4-0 when four runs •were scored in the first two innings. Then with two Clinton 'Ponies on base, Neil Colquhoun hit an inside-the-park home run to make the score 4-3. Neither team scored in the 3rd or fourth innings. Each got two runs in the fifth, leaving the tally 6-5. cap match. Edgar helped win the geme by hitting home his brother, Barry, in the third inning for Clinton's first run. Stew Mustard was walked in the fourth, then stole to second base. Clinton's next two batters struck out before Dave Fawcett slammed a low pitch for a triple and scored Mustard for a comfortable 2-0 lead. After the fourth inning, Amherstburg recalled Paul Jaber Two errors allowed Amherstburg a run in the 8th. A beautiful defensive play by centerfielder Dave Fawcett saved Clinton when he ran from deep left to the right field to catch up to a ball hit by pitcher Jaber. The ball squirted out of Fawcett's glove, but he reacted quickly and fired a perfest throw to Bob Langille for, the out at second base. The third and final game will be played this Sunday in Amherstburg at 4:30 p.m. Walkerton scored in the sixth. Clinton,. after singles by R. Welch, G. Butler, D. Fawcett, B. Irwin and a double by S. Cook, had four runs in. The score after six was 9-7, Walkerton then got an unearned run in the seventh and put two men on base before R. Burns caught a fly for the third out. • In OBA Pee •Wee "B" playoffs, the Ponies met the Essex All-Stars and_ were thumped 18-5 due to eight costly errors. Steve Cook 'hit an inside-the-park homer with one man on. The next game is Saturday, Sept. 16 at 12:30 p.m, in Essex. The Clinton Colts, an Intermediate club, moved one step ahead in the OBA "B" finals with an impressive 7-1 victory over Tillsonburg last weekend. Tillsonburg went ahead 1-0 in 'the third after hitting Archie Pickett for three singles. Don Bartliff fired one of his fine throws from deep left field to the plate for a' big out in the third inning. As in previous games, this play sparked the hitters. Cam Colquhoun and Bartliff hit safely in the fourth, scoring Pickett to even the score 1-1. In the fifth, Doc Miller was safe on a fielding error by the second base, then he stole second on a wild pitch. Butch Fleet hit a single to right, advancing Miller to third. Pickett dragged a perfect bunt to first base to score Miller and put the team ahead 2-1. With a run lead, Clinton came The first invitational Goderich Industrial Fastball Tournament was held at Agricultural Park on Sunday and Monday and proved to be a stand out success. Overall winner of the event was' Holmesville who defeated London 2-0 in the final game of the series. Little Joe Livermore followed with a bit to center field and Laurie Colquhoun scored both on his first home run of the playoffs — a booming 340-tooter. Brad Dutot and Doc Miller scored in the 8th for Clinton's final two runs. After winning the opener 7-5, the Colts dropped a tough 8e7 decision in Tillsonburg on Sunday. Tillsonburg, scored five runs off Ed Daer on eight hits and three Clinton errors in the first six innings. Butch Fleet's three-run homer over the fence put Clinton back in the game. Daer and Brad Dutot scored on Deputy Reeve Walter Sheardown welcomed the teams on behalf of the town and pitched the first ball to councillor Dave Gower with Doug Keene at bat. A Varna player caught the high hit. Members of the organizing committee stated this week it is their hope the tournament will become' an annual affair making a summer counterpart to the Goderich Lions Club Young Canada Hockey Week. Stew Mustard fdr Clinton and Paul Jaber for the visitors pitched 12 fantastic innings in the first game. Amherstburg came up with a run in their half of the 12th after two lead-off singles and Mustard's first two walks of the game loaded the bases. Brian Edgar was called in to pitch after Mustard's arm became sore. Edgar forced his first batter into a groundout to Ron Graham, then struck out the next Amherstburg hitter. With the count two and one on the third batter, an outside pitch eluded. catcher Bill Stirling, allowing Joe Brown to score from third, Bob Langille is eagerly awaited by Lions Midgets players as he crosses home plate for the teams second run in a playoff game with Amherstburg last Sunday. —Staff Photo. After one out in the eighth, Tillsonburg picked up three singles, scoring two runs to go ahead 7-6. A wild pitch eluded Fleet and rolled out of play, allowing, Tillsonburg's winning run. Clinton tried to tie the score in the ninth after Cam Colquhoun clouted a 315-foot homer to narrow the score to 8-7, but a strikeout and two routine groundouts retired the Colts. A protest on Clinton's 7.5 victory in the first game of the best-of-three series last week left the outcome unofficial at presstime. In Clinton's half of the last inning, Mustard pounded out a double, but the next batter grounded out for the third out. Mustard retired 18 batters by strikeout and allowed only 10 hits. Two back-to-back doubles scored Amherstburg's first run in the fouth after Clinton scored its first run.in the prior inning. Ron Graham, third baseman, crossed the plate for Clinton's run. Graham and Brian Edgar pounded out three hits each to e to finish the game and held collect six of Clinton's 10 hits Clinton to lone singles. Up to off Jaber. After a three-quarter hour rest, the teams again took to the field for another fine display of minor team baseball.
