Tax.. ability tY gap
Shirley . Keller
guess I should be writing
thing about hearts and.
ers this week, since
rrow is Valentine's Day,
to tell the truth, I don't feel
hearts and flowery. I've just
the morning paper and
the looks of things there,
only heart the world has is
the rich man's pocketbook.
n editor friend of mine calls
a socialist; he says that
use I am of, the opinion
e should be more equality
working Canadians. I guess
does make me some kind of
t, but for the life' of me I
t understand why the
nary labourer Should be
lized because he isn't rich —
that's exactly what is
ening.
hey say that money talks. I
ve it. Finance minister E. J.
on found that out when he
to introduce a tax measure
p the ante on inheritances.
flood of protest" quickly
inced him that it was not
to inflict such hardship on
ied families.
ncidentally, the Canadian
rnment has recently begun

osexuality and abortion

can understand this `violent
lic reaction" to the new tax
nasals especially from those
ers and businessmen with
stantial estates to hand down
their sons and daughters.
at I can't understand is that
ernment is so quick to back
in a case like this and so slow
implement some method for
relief of unfair tax burdens
not -so -well-to-do workmen

oesn't seem fair.
Everybody knows what the
uble is. People demand so
ch of government today that
es have to be high to meet
enses. If we want the
ernment to pay our medical
s, pave our roads, pick up the
for tending our elderly,
eate our children and even'
our lawyers, we have to pay
it, but why should we not all
on an equal footing.
For example, the main
ference (tax -wise) between
employee and the employer
hat the employer can legally
im his lakeside cottage as a
iness expense especially if he
s the living room and patio
the occasional boozing brawl
entertain his prospective
tomers. Nobody is arguing
h this practice.
To put both fellows on an
al footing, however, . the
rly paid workman down at
plant should rightfully be
able to claim as .an expense use
of his car to get to and from,
Work; and his wife, who works
in the office, should be able tb
claim as _expense the dollars she
Spends for a babysitter.
But there are no such
deductions for the worker, He
pays income tax on every cent
he makes. In short, he is
penalized because he isn't the
boss, yet where would the boss
be without the worker?
That's why the boss' wife gets
a mink stole for'Valentine's Day.'
and the wife of the janitor does
well to get a tutti-fruity bar.
Maybe if tax measures were just
a little more equal Mrs. Boss'
would get a mink scarf and the
janitor's best gal would • have a
bottle of perfume on the same
occasion.
You see, I don't believe we
could ever bridge the gap
between rich and poor but it
does seem to me there could be
a shorter leap,
