Hardy annuals
blossom early
Annuals which. have hardy
frost-resistant seedlings may
be sown outside now, say horti.
culturists with the Ontario De,
partment of Agriculture and
Food. The more rapid-wowing
flowers such as marigolds and
zinnias should be left until early •
May so that they come through
the ground after the danger of
frost has past.
The soil should be well-pre.
pared before sowing the seed.
If possible, dig in some organic
matter such as well-rotted man.
ure, peat, or leaf mold, It's
a good idea to add a complete
fertilizer, such as 5-10-15 or
540.20, to improve soil fer.
tility. Scatter it over the ground
at about 2 poundsper 100 square
feet and dig in well. Before
planting, rake the surface well
to get a fine and level seedbed.
Careful planning of the seed
bed is important. Be sure that
the seeds ,of the tallest plants
are in the background, with the
shortest in the foreground.
Using a stick, mark out the
area allotted to each kind and
then , scatter the seeds over
the soil surface, raking in
lightly. Try to cover the seeds
about as deep as their own dia.'
meter for best results. Next,
water the beds with a fine spray
to ensure that the seeds are not,
washed out of the soil. Keep
the seed bed moist at all times
to ensure good even germina.
tion. When the seedlings reach
a height of two inches, thin
them out to the suggested space
ing, This will help produce
healthy, sturdy plants with good,
blooms.
