I Wednesday evening the Young [people’s Union of Hensall Unit- | ed Church enjoyed a weiner I roast at Turnbull’s Grove, and (Thursday afternoon the pupils of I Hensall Public School spent the afternoon at their annual picnic I at Seaforth Lions Club Park. Bathing was one of the features of the picnics with a full of sports well contested, plenty of good food served. Mr. Wallace Coutts of pawa, Man., and son-in-law daughter. Mr. and Mrs. John Mair. Shirley and Douglas, of Windsor, were recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs, Stewart Bell, and Mrs. line and Nee- and Mr. Coutts’ sister-in-law, Gertrude Keen. Tudkersmith Teachers Recent Bride Honored Mrs. Howard Smale was Honored At Picnic An enjoyable time was spent recently at S.S. IV Tuckersmith when a picnic supper followed by a program of sports and a dance was held in honor of Mr. Arthur Finlayson, popular teach er who has tendered his resigna tion after six years of teaching and for Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sla- cin and son Johnny who will soon leave the community for their new home in Clinton. Mr. Finlayson was presented a trilight lamp, the address read by Mervyn Eyre, and presentation by Harry Ja- Mr. Finlayson made a reply. with was the cohi. able Mr. and Mrs. Fred Slavin presented with an electric and Johnny with an ornament. The address was read by Angus Robertson, and the presentation by Hazel Slavin and Marly n Eyre. Mrs. Fred Appleby was the recipient of several presentations. Hensall Women’s Institute presented her with a lovely purse, Legion La dies’ Auxiliary made her the gift of a sweater, and the Wo men’s Christian Temperance Union a pair of pillow slips. A period of bingo was enjoyed and refreshments served. Last Hillsgreen Service, Church To Be Sold Hillsgreen United Church saw its last service on Sunday at 2 p.in. when Rev. A. E, Hinton preached his farewell sermon. Next week it will be offered for sale on condition that it be de molished. Several prospective buyers already have inspected the building. It was built in 189 4 as Hills- green Presbyterian Church. In 1925 the congregation joined the United Church of Canada. For the past 12 years 13 families in the district have maintained the church. Five miles north-west from Hensall. Hillsgreen once boasted a blacksmith shop, two churches, a store and several fine homes. Only the store and the United Church remain. Honoured Before Leaving Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Appleby who will leave the village short ly to take up residence in coe, were honored with a sentation by the choir of United Church of which were valued members. The choir presented them an electric tea kettle. Mr. Mrs. Appleby will be much miss ed from the village where they took an active part in the af fairs and in church organiza tions. Martin, David, and Stephen, of Edmonton, Alta., expect to arrive in Hensall early in July to spend their summer vacation with the latter’s par ents. Mr. and Mrs. E. Geiger. Grade Eight Promotions For Hensall School Grade VIH pupils of Hensall Public School who have been promoted to Grade IX are follows: Marilyn Anderson, Smith. Margaret Reid. Norminton was win ner of the boys’ grade eight general proficiency award while Marlyn Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Anderson won the girls grade eight general proficiency award. Former District Girl Marks 50 Years Wed Mr. and Mrs. Fred Shelter of Buffalo celebrated their fiftieth June 25. 1902 in Shelter’s lived at for the wedding anniversary on They were married in Greenway, Ontario, Mrs. home town. They have 4S1 West Utieh Street past 49 years. They have one daughter liv ing, Francis, now Mrs. Miller, and a son, Kenneth who died one year ago. Mr. Shelter was employed with the Bell Telephone Co. From 1900 to 1933 when he retired. He was active in church work being Sunday School Superin tendent for many years. Mrs. Shelter who is 75 was also active in church work, life member of the WMS. Gifts and flowers were many. Dinner was served at Lyons Tea Roon and the evening spent at the Sketch home. Mr. Shelter will he remembered by old friends in Dashwood and Zurich. Pennington and The congregations of Kippen, Hillsgreen United Churches held their annual Sunday School pic nic at Jowett’s Grove. Bayfield, on Thursday last. A good line up of sports were engaged in the afternoon with Mr. Harry Cald well, Mrs. John Sinclair Gerald Parsons in charge. Around 200 sat down sumptous picnic supper which Mrs. Harry Caldwell an address to Rev. and Hinton and Ross Love of Hills green presented them with a silver tea service and a purse of money. Rev. Hinton made a very fitt ing reply. All joined in sining, “Blest Be the Tie That Binds’*. Preaches .Farewell Rev. Albert Hinton who for the past six years has been min ister of St. Andrews United Church here and Hillsgreen de livered his farewell messages on Sunday last prior to his depar ture to Birchton, Quebec, this week. A large congregation was pre sent at Kippen at eleven a.m. at which time Don Bell sang the solo “My Task". In the after noon Hillsgreen church was full. Not only was it Rev. Hinton’s farewell but it was also the first service before closing the church Many former members were pre sent and Mrs. J. Bonthron of Hensall was guest soloist. The congregat ion of both churches wish Hinton every new charge. Rev. R. E. G. Dennies of Tor onto, a former student minister, was the guest speaker for the day and brought timely mes sage in keeping with the occa sion. Dr, R. G. McKay, Tiverton, a former minister, and Rev. George Lamont, Mitchell, a form er member, assisted at the eve ning service and Rev. Donald B. McKay of Knox Church, Strat ford, brought greetings from the Presbytery. The choir and a male quar tette, composed of Messrs. E Templeman, F. Stagg, E. Allen and R. Laing, under the leader ship of Mrs. K. McKellar, pro vided special music at both serv ices. Mr. E. H. Graham, Crum- lin, assisted with two beautiful solos at the morning service. Margaret Keith, 79, Born In Hamilton Veteran member of the teach ing staff of the Edmonton Pub lic School Board, Miss Margaret Keith. Le Marchand apts.. pass ed away in her 79th year. Miss Keith taught there from 1910 until her retirement in 1940 most i School, She was born at Hensall, Ont., first went to Edmonton in 1891, returning again in 1905 after teaching for a time at Hensall and at Bensgarth, Man. She was a member of the Northern Al geria Pioneers Old Timers As sociation and First Presbyterian Church.
