Cagers Win Two Titles 'Happy Gang' with Dun- when one first score Prong The record had a Girls Recapture Local Trophy The .local senior “B” girls came through two hard battles with Aylmer and Kingsville teams to bring home the basket­ ball championship f r o m the WOSSA finals played Saturday at Beck Memorial Collegiate, London. They will again hold the S. B. Taylor trophy after letting it go for a year. Eketer girls last held it in 1950. The final game with Aylmer clearly showed* their power they climbed through a point disadvantage in the quarter to bring the final to a 24-9 decision. Jean Taylor scored high 11 points followed by Julia lop’s eight and five by Dorothy Pooley. For the Aylmei’ team, B. Harper and D. Prong snagged four points each. The game chalked up a perfect an undefeated season. Score by quarters: AYLMER , EXETER . The local hoopsisters bit more trouble in their semi­ final game with the spunky Kingsville crew. Lead by Jean Taylor and Julia Dunlop with 16 points each to their credit, they defeated the , Kingsville team by a sparse four point margin. With no forward substitutes, the Kingsville gals held to a 3 6- 3 6 tie at the end of the fourth quarter. M. Sanders of their team marked 10 baskets for her own, Dunlop and Taylor for Exe­ ter each snagged a basket in a hot three minutes of overtime for the winning four points. Gary Middleton races Juniors Panther Juniors served notice to Western Ontario “B” schools Saturday that although they finally wrestled the boys champ- ionshij) from the seniors, Exeter would be coming back for the silver cup next year and for a few years to come. Paced by six-foot-four Gary Middleton, the juniors edged St. Rose 53-48 Saturday night to win the junior title—an honor they barely missed last year. For coach Glen Mickle, it was the third championship he has brought home in as many years at the school. Middleton hooped 27 points in the final game, one of the closest of the tournament. St. Rose, an Amherstburg separate school, held a 28-27 edge at the end of the first half. At the third- quarter whistle Exeter was ahead 41-40 in the see-saw tilt, Baskets by Middleton and Hicks* gave the locals a five point spread soon aftei’ the opening of the last stanza and the boys held their lead. John Hicks contributed 15 points to the juniors’ win. Row­ cliffe, Bill Batten, Bill Yungblut and Jim Sturgis scored the rest. Sinasack was St. Rose’s big­ gest threat, hooping a game total of 26 points. After a first half total of 18 however, the locals held him to eight in the rest of the game. Easy Win The 42-40 against scored 12. The Yungblut kept the Elgin boys well undex’ control throughout the game. Panther juniors' lost only one game dxxring theii' drive to the championship—a semi-final tilt against Delhi. It was a two-game series, how­ ever, and the juniors took the round easily. John Hicks 14 and Gary Middleton defence of Hicks and Senior sit out because 24 held 11 Ron Senior Boys Lose Honors Handicapped by the sprained ankle of Captain Ken Moir, the local seniors lost their “B” title in their first game against Lis- towel Saturday morning. The defeat marked the end of a two-year reign ovei- “B” competition. Moir was forced to most of the second half of the pain of his injury. The steady guard and smooth-work­ ing playmaking led the team to a 19-17 half-time lead but Lis- towel’s Blues clicked for points in the last half and the locals to 11. Glen Schroeder hooped points for the Panthers. Heimrich scored eight. Hay paced the Listowel five with a 27-point total, including a brilliant 18- point second half splurge. Lose Consolation The Panthers lost the sonsola- tion final by one point in a thrilling night game. The final score was 59-58 for the St. Thomas school. Ron Heimrich paced the locals by swishing 19 points. Moir and Schroeder scored a dozen each.
