Phillips and Mrs. Phillips, of Qwen Sound, on a trip through Manitoulin Island, returning by North Bay. At the Caven Presbyterian Church anniversary services Mrs. Henry Harhurn, of Staffa, and Mrs. Harold Simpson, of town, rendered a very pleasing duet entitled "Sundown”. Two weeks previous Mrs. Simpson was the guest soloist at the Staffa an­ niversary services. AVeek-end visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Kydd were Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Willard and daughter Betty Ann of Mt. Hope, also their son, C.fn. Roy Willard, R.C.E.M.E., of Toronto; Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Sanders and daughter Margaret, Miss Ethel Kydd and. Mr. Robert Kydd, of London. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Dinney and Richard Paul, also Mrs. Adolph Keller spent the week­ end with Mr. and Mrs. Earl Tel- fer, of Brantford, and with Mr. and Mrs. Mervyn Keller. Miss Olive Prior has received word of the death of her neice, Mrs. Floyd Woodruff, of Eash Lansing, Mich. The deceased was the former Ethlene Kay, daugh- tei' of Mrs. Laura Kay and the late William Kay, formerly of Thames Road. The funeral place at Lansing Monday. Mrs. Rose Russell has turned after visiting for weeks at Richmond Hill her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. A. J. McKinnon. Mr. and Mrs. C. S. MacNaugh- ton were in Toronto a couple of days last week where Mr. Mac- Naughton attended the annual convention of the Canadian Seed Trade Association. They also went by air spending a day in Chicago. Mr. and Mrs. A. jcingland, of Toronto, have, returned home, after spending eight weeks with Mr. and Mrs. William Parker, of Stephen. Other visitors were Mr. and Mrs. A. Smith, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Fingland, of Flint, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. E. Hendrix, of Detroit, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. S. Hodji and Bruce of Toronto, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Hodji, of Lon­ don, and Mr. and Mrs. B. Skingle of Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. D. Menzie and Mrs. Henderson, of London, at­ tended the funeral of the late Roderick Ellis Wednesday after­ noon. Mr. and Mrs. John M. Broder­ ick of Regina, Sask., visited re­ cently with the formei' and sis­ ter and brothers in town. Mrs. Edna Hearts, who has spent the past year and a half in Exeter owing to the illness of her mother, the late Mrs. E. A. Follick, returned to her home in Toronto on Wednesday. Adult Group The first meeting of the new­ ly organized Young Adults Club of Caven Presbyterian Church was held on Monday evening. Miss Alice Pfaff, retiring presi­ dent of the former Young Peo­ ple’s Society was in the chair. The scripture reading was taken by Mrs. Hilton’ Laing and Miss Pfaff led in prayer. Miss Jean McDonald offered two vocal numbers, "Mother Macree” and "The Sunshine of Your Smile”, which were greatly en­ joyed by all. The speaker of the evening was Mr. Thomas Pryde, who complimented the young people for their efforts on behalf of the church and encouraged them in this new venture as a young adults’ group. He went on to speak, then, of some of the im­ pressions he had received from the recent trip he had taken with members of the Legislature through Northern Ontario, de­ scribing some of the great de­ velopments going on in the lum­ bering and mining industries, and ’ pointing out how several large towns have sprung up in recent years with all the con­ veniences of modern civilization except adequate road communi­ cation with the outside world. He appealed for a„ better under­ standing on the part of the peo­ ple of Southern Ontario for the people of Northern Ontario and their problems in order that we might be more tolerant when the government diverts certain expenditures from Southern tario to the north that we we need. The officers elected for year were: President, Roy Camp­ bell; vice-president, Mrs. Hilton Laing; secretary, Mrs. Graham Mason; treasurer, Mrs. Fred Simmons; pianist, Mac MacGreg- gor; programme convenor, Bill MacLean; membership convenor, Miss Alice Pfaff. Roy Campbell took the chair for the closing exercises. Mr. Sinclair closed the meeting with prayer. Roderick Eli is Roderick James Ellis, a known citizen of Exeter, passed away in St. Joseph’s Hospital, London, on Monday after a com­ paratively short illness, AVhile employed at the Centralia Air­ port Saturday, Mr. Ellis was stricken with a heart attack and was removed to hospital in. Lon­ don in a critical condition. Born near Parkhill, he was in his fifty-eight year. He is survived by, his bereaved widow, the for­ mer Anna Dow, ‘ “ Alex, with the __ at Shilo, Man., Peter, of Chat­ ham, and Harry, at home; also one sister, Mrs. Donald Menzie, of London. The funeral was held from the Hopper-Hockey funeral home Wednesday afternoon con­ ducted by Rev. Mr.,Sinclair. The bearers were Messrs. Roy Camp­ bell, Bruce Tuckey, William El- lerlngton, Roy Webber, L. Hen­ nessey and Fred Cornish, inter­ ment was in the Exeter Ceme­ tery.
